Georginio Wijnaldum believes that Liverpool have 'a real chance' of winning this year's EFL Cup, after the Reds progressed to the quarter finals by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Tuesday evening.
Wijnaldum started as his side won to claim their last eight spot at Anfield, and assisted Daniel Sturridge for the striker's second goal of the night.
A real chance
Now, when asked by the club's official website if he thinks they can start thinking about winning the competition, the Dutchman remarked "it [winning the trophy] seems like a real chance."
However, trying to keep a calm head, Wijnaldum explained that he and his teammates must "look at it from round to round, and try to win the games" rather than getting too carried away.
Wijnaldum's comments were made before Wednesday's fixtures, with Manchester City and Chelsea both being knocked out of the competition, strengthening Liverpool's chances.
No easy games as youngsters impress
In addition to that, the Reds were then handed a favourable tie at home to Leeds United in the quarter finals. However, speaking about any potential team that the side could face, Wijnaldum said "if you want to win the cup, you have to beat everyone," adding that "there are no easy games."
Manager Jürgen Klopp showed off the strength of his squad by making 11 changes for the last 16 tie, and still managing to oversee a victory.
"We have a good squad with lots of quality," is what Wijnaldum thought was shown on Tuesday, quipping that it's a "good sign" when you can have players replaced yet still have people who can "fit into the team immediately."
Youngsters Kevin Stewart and Marko Grujic played, whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ovie Ejaria made their competitive debuts.
Asked how he thought they fared, Wijnaldum praised them for how didn't seem like they were nervous, and said how he was "really impressed" with each individual performance.
