Johann Berg Gudmundsson feels that Saturday’s performance in Burnley’s 3-2 win against Crystal Palace was his best yet in a Claret shirt.

The Icelandic midfielder was a summer arrival from now-League One side Charlton Athletic, and has slowly developed into one of the club’s most threatening players in recent games, with his starring role – a first Burnley goal and a key part in the other two goals – against the Eagles his crowning moment thus far.

The former Addicks star, when questioned about whether the level of performance had been his best, said ‘I think it is, I can’t deny that’, before giving his thoughts on his first half strike, which gave Burnley a 2-0 lead.

Gudmundsson said "it was great to get my first goal in the Premier League, and I think a lot of people in Iceland will have been watching," with the 26-year-old admitting "I thought the ball was going over the bar but it crept in so I was very happy to get my first goal."

Iceland international quick to praise the group

Ultimately, however, Gudmundsson was quick to appreciate the collective efforts of his teammates, who ground out another three points to lift the club into the top half of the Premier League table.

The winger said "it’s nice to be involved but it’s all about the team," and stressed that "it doesn’t matter who scores, as long as we are winning, we’re happy."

Gudmundsson, who topped the assists chart in the Championship last year with 11, actually played against Burnley in what would be his final appearance for his former club at the Valley last May. His knowledge of the team’s belief, therefore, remains clear, as he later admitted "It shows the spirit in the squad – we stuck in there, got the winner and we were really happy."

Giving his thoughts on the game itself, Gudmundsson mused that the club ‘had played well in the first half, we were calm and we kept the ball well,’ before noting that Palace "put two big men up front so it was tough to play against," and was ultimately satisfied that "in the end, we got the three points, which is all that matters."
