FC Schalke star Maximilian Meyer has revealed that Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur were interested in securing his services this summer.

Speaking to Sport Bild in Germany, the attacking midfielder explained how Mauricio Pochettino wanted to bring him to White Hart Lane, but any attempt at negotiations were firmly rejected by the Bundesliga side.

Was Sissoko back-up to Meyer?

Spurs eventually spent a large sum of money on Moussa Sissoko on deadline day, with his £30million fee possibly being money that had earlier been designated for the 21-year-old Meyer.

Sissoko has made a slow start to life in North London, leaving fans to question if there were more suitable alternatives, and Meyer's recent comments won't have helped ease their concerns over the summer dealings.

"I know that there was interest and the club was asked, but Schalke immediately put a stop to it. So the matter was settled," the youngster revealed, going on to admit that if he ever moved from Schalke, "I would like to move to England."

However, that doesn't look like something that's on the agenda currently, Meyer stating "I feel good about Schalke" for now.

Spurs in need of attacking invention

Meyer may well have been a strong signing for Spurs, who are in need of attacking invention, having managed just 15 goals in their first 10 Premier League games, half the amount of table-topping Liverpool

However, things could be looking up for Spurs in the attacking midfield department, despite missing out on Meyer, as they pursue the signing of Real Madrid's Isco.

Another player they were interested in during the summer, the Spaniard's lack of playing time in Spain has seen the Lilywhites' interest maintained, and there's now talk of a possible loan move taking place in the January transfer window.
