Birmingham City have agreed personal terms with St Patrick’s Athletic left-back Ryan Burke, according to the Irish club’s official website.

The 16-year-old defender will officially join the Championship side once a two-year contract is signed next month.

Burke will continue to train with St Pat’s until the end of June when he will complete his move to the United Kingdom.

The Blues were said to be impressed when Burke travelled to the Midlands for a trial earlier in the year.

Burke has excelled at U17 level

The Irishman only joined the Dublin-based outfit last July, following spells with Crumlin United and St Joseph’s Boys, but made a sizeable impression with the under-17 team.

The youngster started every match last term as St Pat’s under-17s finished top of the SSE Airtricity League U17 Northern Elite Division and reached the Mark Farren Cup final.

Such form has continued this season as, yet again, the full-back has been an ever-present in the league and has been able to contribute assists due to the quality of his set-pieces.

Burke also scored six goals in one outing in March as St Pat’s thrashed Wexford FC.

Burke 'delighted' with move

Burke told the Saints’ official website that he is “really looking forward to it” and he has been “working towards a move to England for a few years”.

“I'm delighted that the move has come off and I have a big two years ahead of me." He said.

Those who have worked with the youngster in the past have only been complementary in the wake of his transfer.

Manager Jamie Moore stated: “It's excellent news for Ryan. He's been fantastic since he joined us last July and is one of the best young professionals I've ever coached.

"Ryan is the perfect example for the rest of our young players to follow. He works hard, is dedicated, believes in himself and has excellent ability and application.”
