Daniel Amartey's future has been in question during the past year with the emergence of both Ricardo Pereira and James Justin.

With the former FC Copenhagen defender recovering from an ankle injury he suffered in October 2018, does Amartey have a future at the club?

What has happened so far

Leicester City secured the signature of Amartey in January 2016 for a region of £6m from FC Copenhagen, before making his debut in the 1-0 victory over Norwich City.

In his first full season, Amartey started three of the opening UEFA Champions League group stage game and 17 Premier League games. His first goal for the club came in the 2-2 draw at Stoke City at the end of 2016.

However, the following season saw Amartey's game time begin to fall. After coming on in the final 18 minutes against Arsenal on the opening day of the 2017/18 season, Amartey did not feature in the league until the 2-2 draw with Manchester United in December.

Under Craig Shakespeare and Claude Puel, Amartey played all 390 minutes in the clubs' EFL Cup run to the quarter-final.

Injury setback

After the arrival of Pereira from FC Porto in 2018, Amartey faced competition with the Portuguese and Danny Simpson for the right-back position.

Amartey was a familiar face on the Foxes team-sheet in the opening 10 league games, starting six of the games.

However, in the 1-1 draw with West Ham in October, Amartey suffered an ankle injury that saw him miss out on first-team involvement until he was named on the bench for the 4-0 win over Luton Town in September.

Agent comments

With the 2019/20 campaign on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, rumours have begun speculating about players.

Amartey's representative, Yussif Alhassan Chibsah has spoken out about his clients future, suggesting that the 25-year-old will be looking for a new club.

Speaking to Starr FM, he said: "We are looking to find new opportunities for Amartey.

"He's been out of favour from the new gaffer so we will see how best we can solve the issue.

"Amartey is still with the Foxes but he has not been getting more playing time due to the fact that he got injured. After his injury, they consider him as surplus so there should be a way out."

Only four months ago, Amartey was linked with the likes of Sheffield United and Newcastle United in a bid to find regular football.

However, Brendan Rodgers has commented on the Ghanaian and praised him for his patience.

"It's not hard to keep the squad happy, but I have empathy for the guys [not playing] because we're only at the level we are because of the players that aren't playing," the Foxes boss explained to the press.

What next for Amartey

First-team football looked on the cards for Amartey when Pereira was ruled out for the rest of the season with an ACL injury picked up in the 4-0 victory over Aston Villa in March.

However, the postponement of the Premier League season meant that has not happened. With the comments from his representative and the lack of game time, Amartey could find himself elsewhere in a bid to ensure he finds himself in Charles Akonnor's team for the Ghana national team.
