There have been a lot of rumours circling around in the last week linking Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell with a move to Chelsea.

Having already acquired the services of Hakim Ziyech for next season, Chelsea are looking to spend more and have agreed a deal with RB Leipzig for their highly rated striker Timo Werner.

Now, the club are looking to sign a left-back to sure up the defence.

England international Chilwell is looking like Chelsea’s first choice for the position and many are tipping him to be successful at the club as they look build a team capable of challenging for the title under Frank Lampard.

Glen Johnson, a man who knows what it takes to be a full-back at Stamford Bridge, believes Chilwell would be a great addition to the team.

Speaking to TALKsport, Johnson revealed why he believes Chilwell would be a marked improvement on the players Chelsea already have at left-back.

  • Johnson “a fan” of Chilwell

Any move to bring the 23-year-old to Chelsea is likely to be an expensive one for the Blues, with some reports suggesting Leicester are demanding £75 million for his services.

Glen Johnson believes, however, that Chelsea should do whatever it takes to make the Englishman a Chelsea player:

I’ve said many times I am a fan of Chilwell.

“I like the way he carries himself. You don’t really hear him unless it’s football related which I like, and I think he’s the sort of player [Frank Lampard] would connect with.

“He’s the sort of out-and-out left-back they haven’t had for a while.

“I know Ashley Cole was irreplaceable, but in terms of a natural, solid left-back, they haven’t had one for a while and I think he’ll do very well."

  • Chilwell an improvement on Alonso

Spaniard Marcos Alonso is currently the first choice left-back at Chelsea, although at times this season the club have tried both Emerson and club-captain Cesar Azpilicueta in the role.

Although Alonso has been a great servant for the club, Johnson believes Chilwell is a more natural fit for the position.

Alonso is a fantastic player. But I don’t think he’s a solid natural left-back.

“There’s no doubt he is a wonderful footballer but Chilwell is a natural full-back.

“It’s a hefty price tag, there’s no doubting that, but if [Chelsea] can get a deal for him that is reasonable then he’s a player they should try to get.”
