Big win for Bluebirds

The win takes Cardiff level on points with the play-offs and just one goal behind Preston as Neil Harris’s men look to finish atop the big pack chasing a top-six place.

For Leeds it’s an opportunity missed, and they remain below West Brom and just the seven points ahead of third-placed Fulham instead of 10.

12:402 years ago

20’ Phillips takes the free kick and it’s straight into the wall, with his rebound effort winning a corner. The short corner is played to Dallas and White tries to flick his cross back at goal, he gets power on it but it’s just over the bar.

12:212 years ago

Player boosts for Cardiff

Neil Harris speaking to Sky Sports: “We played a friendly against Swansea last week to try and set us up for what it’s going’s to be like. It’s the same for everybody and we’re just thankful to be back on the football pitch, thankful that our fans can watch the football and that we can put a smile on people’s faces hopefully.

“It has been a short build-up, a lot of individual training sessions rather than group sessions. What it’s done for us is enable us to get a couple of important players back in. Mendez-Laing and Tomlin are two important players for us at the attacking end of the pitch coming back onto the team sheet who we probably wouldn’t have hand if the season finished in March and April.”

11:432 years ago

‘New experience’

Marcelo Bielsa speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game: “The situation is the same for all the teams. There is no same experience before to this one. We have worked to try and solve these new experiences.”

11:322 years ago

Last time out

“Marcelo Bielsa’s side endured a terrible run from the middle of December and February, in which Leeds won just two of their 12 fixtures during that time.

Their plight all started, of course, with that dramatic comeback by the Bluebirds at Elland Road that ended 3-3, with Cardiff 3-0 down with an hour gone.

The Whites will be hoping their opponents don’t trigger another poor run of form with automatic promotion by no means secured for Bielsa’s side.”

Play-off ambitions

There are no shortage of contenders for the play-off places and Cardiff are just three points off the top six going into this match.

Neil Harris has sprung some surprises with his team selection, with both Lee Tomlin and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing on the bench and Callum Paterson preferred up front.

Greg Cunningham isn’t ready to return but more surprising is the absence from the team of Josh Murphy.

11:192 years ago

Big opportunity for Leeds

It’s a very impressive starting line-up for Leeds, even without injured playmaker Pablo Hernandez.

They need a point to climb back above West Brom at the top of the Championship table but victory, more importantly, will put them 10 points clear of Fulham in third and edge them closer to the Premier League.

Team news

“The big injury news that came out of the Leeds camp was that talismanic midfielder Pablo Hernandez would not be available for the game after picking up a knock in training.

Neither Adam Forshaw nor Jean Kevin-Augustin will be ready in time for the game either according to The Athletic’s Leeds correspondent Phil Hay.

Kalvin Phillips missed Leeds' last match back in March with a knock but is now fit again. Kiko Casilla remains suspended for the next six matches, after receiving an eight-game ban from the FA back in March for racially abusing Charlton forward Jonathan Leko.

Cardiff have Lee Tomlin, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Jazz Richards, Greg Cunningham and Isaac Vassell available again.”

Cardiff in scrap for top six

A host of teams are targeting a place in the play-offs and the first day of the Championship’s return didn’t made things any simpler - seven clubs from sixth to 12th are currently separated by three points.

Cardiff are among the teams with a shout of breaking into the top six, and indeed a three-goal win over Leeds would lift them all the way there.

That may be unlikely but anything that Neil Harris’s side can get could prove crucial in what is likely to be a close race right to the finish.

18:192 years ago

Leeds can regain top spot

Leeds have spent the past three months of football’s shutdown top of the table, yet head coach Marcelo Bielsa said he wanted to earn promotion on the pitch and that is now their challenge.

West Bromwich Albion’s draw with Birmingham City yesterday meant that the Baggies moved top on goal difference, so a point is required for Leeds to move back to the summit.

But the most important derby result yesterday was Brentford’s win at Fulham - it means United can go 10 points clear of third place with a win in Wales and take another giant leap towards the Premier League.

Championship return

This is a first game back from the coronavirus-enforced break for both of these sides, and the last of the first round in the Championship.

For Leeds the aim in these final nine matches is to secure a long-awaited return to the Premier League. For Cardiff, every point will be a vital in a tightly-packed race for the play-offs.
