FULL-TIME

That's it. Watford's misery compiled by an energetic, well-organised, relentless and clinical Southampton side.

The Saints climb a place in the table to 13th, while the Hornets remain 16th, just one point above the relegation zone.

18:25a year ago

YELLOW CARD

95' Doucouré is booked for leaving a leg on Adams.

The game's nearly over, and neither side will necessarily be disappointed about that.

Work to be done for Watford, but a great afternoon's shift from Southampton.

18:20a year ago
91' There will be five minutes of added time at Vicarage Road.
18:18a year ago
89' It's nearly four for the Saints as Adams races past Dawson to force a good save from Foster.

It would've been his first league goal for the club, but it wasn't to be.

Redmond then hits the post from the subsequent attack - Southampton aren't intent on stopping at three.

18:12a year ago

GOAL - SOUTHAMPTON - WARD-PROWSE - 1-3

82' You don't stop those!

It's from an ideal position, central and just outside the box, but it's a beauty of a strike from the set-piece specialist Ward-Prowse.

Foster gave him a lot of room to his right, but the goalkeeper wouldn't have had a chance with that anyway.

The deficit is restored in double-quick time.

18:10a year ago
81' Ward-Prowse has a free-kick in a very promising position here.
18:09a year ago

GOAL - WATFORD - OWN GOAL - 1-2

80' The hosts are back in it!

Holebas whips in a vicious cross and Bednarek, under pressure from Welbeck, can only head past his own goalkeeper.

Could the comeback be on here?

18:08a year ago

SUBSTITUTION - WATFORD

79' A possible change of shape from Watford as Pussetto, traditionally a winger, comes on for full-back Femenía.
18:03a year ago

SUBSTITUTION - SOUTHAMPTON

75' Long makes way for Adams in a second change for the visitors.
18:03a year ago

SUBSTITUTION - WATFORD

73' Watford make a trio of changes: Welbeck replaces Hughes; Masina makes way for Holebas; and 18-year old João Pedro steps in for Pereyra to make his Premier League debut.

Pearson has hit the panic button.

18:00a year ago

GOAL - SOUTHAMPTON - INGS - 0-2

70' Self-destruction from the hosts.

Foster throws the ball straight to Ings, who gratefully accepted the invitation to stride forward and power the ball home with the aid of a deflection.

A calamitous error from one of Watford's most reliable performers; could it prove costly in their bid to survive?

17:53a year ago

SUBSTITUTION - SOUTHAMPTON

64' The first change of the game sees Smallbone replaced by Armstrong for the visitors.
17:50a year ago
60' That could have been the moment for the hosts.

Again, a loose ball dropped kindly for Hughes in the area, but his shot was blocked. Deeney then had a chance to take aim, but gave the Southampton defence enough time to tackle and clear.

17:47a year ago
57' Watford are pressing better and look more menacing in attacking situations.

Still, though, they are yet to create a chance of note in this game. That has to change soon.

17:37a year ago
47' Watford have a chance from a set-piece situation as the ball drops nicely for Sarr in the box, but his fierce shot is blocked bravely by the Southampton defence.

Moments later, Deeney fires well over from just outside the penalty area.

A fast start from the Hornets, but they're still yet to trouble Alex McCarthy.

HALF-TIME - WATFORD 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON

Well, it's been quite a tepid match so far, but Southampton have Watford exactly where they want them and the Hornets look powerless to adapt.

The Saints have played all of the good football but Foster hasn't actually had a great deal to do - it's in attack and midfield where the home side will feel disappointed.

It's set to be a massive second half for Pearson and his players here at Vicarage Road.

17:02a year ago

YELLOW CARD

32' Dawson goes into the book for a cynical challenge on Long.
16:59a year ago
29' The game pauses for Long to receive treatment for a suspected leg injury.
16:55a year ago
24' Ward-Prowse darts into the area to latch onto a lofted pass before attempting to dink the ball over Foster for a second for his side - just too high.

Southampton are looking far and away the better side here. Watford need to get going, and soon; this would be a really cruel blow to their survival aspirations.

16:48a year ago

GOAL - SOUTHAMPTON - INGS - 0-1

16' What a strike from Southampton's leading scorer!

Ings receives the ball from Smallbone, shimmies away from Cathcart's tackle and caresses the ball beautifully into the bottom corner; Foster had no chance with that one.

Perhaps disappointing from a defensive point of view, but the striker will be delighted.

16:45a year ago
15' Southampton work the ball nicely into the Watford box, but Long's fizzed shot is gratefully clutched by Foster.
16:43a year ago
12' Sarr makes a menacing run down the right and into the penalty area, but his cut-back finds no one in yellow and black.
16:35a year ago
5' No threat posed to either goal thus far, but the tempo of this one is good.
16:30a year ago

Ralph Hasenhuttl quotes

“The last game we played against them was an important one for sure, but in the end we are speaking about a new game.

“Now in this time of the season you will face teams that are playing for everything, either Champions League qualification or to avoid relegation.

“We are also not 100% safe and we need points, so if you go there and you think you can just play football then you are wrong, you must take the fight there and if you don’t, you have no chance. We must invest more, sprint more and play better.”

Nigel Pearson quotes

“I’m not worried, I’ve got confidence in my players. We’ve got winnable games coming up and it’s just important that we play well in those.

“It’s up to us to retain the option of things being in our own hands. That’s all it is. We’ve got to continue to look to improve, look to be as good as we can be and it’s very straightforward in my mind in that regard.

“It shows you how tough the Premier League is. It’s about getting enough points to stay up, it’s as simple as that.”

Match facts

Of the last 13 meetings, Watford have emerged victorious from just one — this follows a run of six consecutive wins over the Saints in all competitions.

The Hornets are also winless in six home league encounters with Southampton since 2007 (D4, L2), and have kept just one home Premier League clean sheet against these opponents from five ties at Vicarage Road.

Last meeting

The most recent encounter between the sides took place at the end of November, when St Mary’s Stadium oversaw a 2-1 victory for Southampton in what was at the time a crucial fixture in an intriguing relegation dogfight.

Watford took the lead through record signing Ismaïla Sarr, but surrendered the points in the space of five second-half minutes, granting the Saints their first league win for well over two months — it was no surprise, given the gravity of the result and the manner in which it was decided, that said night on the south coast marked the end of the road for Quique Sánchez Flores, and eventually the subsequent appointment of current head coach Nigel Pearson.

Southampton's form

One of the obvious candidates for relegation amid a poor run of form earlier in the season, the Saints have turned their fortunes around and — bar a spectacular collapse on their behalf — should be as good as safe for the remainder of this campaign.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side returned to action with a 3-0 drubbing over bottom-of-the-table Norwich City just over a week ago, though they did suffer to Arsenal in their last assignment with centre-back Jack Stephens receiving a straight red card.

Southampton currently sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Watford's form

Suffice it to say that the Hornets have not hit the ground running since the return of the Premier League following its three-month hiatus, though there remain many points to be won and no clear reason to lose hope of survival just yet.

They followed up their dramatic and somewhat impressive draw with Leicester City with an uninspiring defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor, a game in which Watford were lucky not to concede in the first half before being made to pay for their profligacy despite showing more promise in the second.

Watford currently sit 16th in the Premier League table.
