Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 3-1 by Sheffield United in the Premier League on Thursday evening.

Blades' new fan-favourite, Sander Berge, scored his first goal for the club as his side took all three points.

After Arsenal ran riot against Norwich on Wednesday night, Spurs remain below their North London rivals in the league. For United, they climb to seventh in the league.

  • Story of the game

The Blades started the brighter of the two sides with the majority of possession inside Spurs' half but showed little threat on goal.

Spurs grew into the game and Moussa Sissoko had a wonderful opportunity at the back post to put his side one up but his shot was just wide.

United took the lead on the half-hour mark through Norweigan midfielder, Berge. Berge's low-driven strike beat Hugo Lloris and trickled into the bottom-left corner of the goal.

Spurs replied instantly and had the ball in the back of the net thanks to Harry Kane but the goal was ruled out by VAR after the ball touched Lucas Moura's arm. It was cruel, to say the least. The replay was shown on the big screen inside the stadium and the Tottenham bench jumped out of their seats in disgrace at the decision.

According to Law 12 in the IFAB Laws of the Game 2019-20

A player who 'gains possession/control of the ball after it has touched their hand/arm' and then creates a goal-scoring opportunity is guilty of a handball offence.

Therefore, the decision is correct and alines with the official rules, however, anyone who understands football will know Moura had no control over the incident and was harsh on the Brazilian.

The second-half belonged to Spurs until the 70th minute. Substitute, Lys Mousset, doubled the Blades' lead and secured the victory for the home side. Ben Osborn and Enda Stevens linked up beautifully down the left-flank before Stevens picked out Mousset.

United were not finished there, similarly to Mousset's goal, Oli McBurnie added to the already comfortable Blades lead. It was Berge again involved in the goal as it was his cross that was placed to perfection.

Kane finally got a goal in the 90th minute but it was far too late to spark any sort of comeback. Kane's goal tally extended to 13 in the league this season.

  • What next for Spurs

With a North London derby still to come, Spurs are nine points off Chelsea in fourth place.

The focus for Mourinho will be to push on for a Europa League spot, however, with Wolves, Blades and Arsenal above them - the Portuguese manager has a task on his hands. Spurs have still only managed three wins on the road in the league this season.

Chris Wilder will have all the confidence in his players as they face a tough run of fixtures to conclude the season, but the way his players performed tonight - he will have no worries.

Mourinho has the derby on his mind but his side also have to play Leicester City who sit in third - a victory for Spurs would help his former side, Manchester United, in their bid for a Champions League place.
