Chelsea's 3-2 defeat to West Ham on Wednesday night was another reminder of the blues' defensive frailties and right at the centre of this was goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 25-year-old was let off after Tomas Soucek's first goal was disallowed, but the same player scored again a few minutes later, when Kepa foolishly came charging off his line from a corner and was left in no-man's land.

With 37 goals conceded in his 28 Premier League appearances and one of the worst save ratios of any top goalkeeper in Europe, if Chelsea are to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City next season Frank Lampard may need to bring in a new number one.

Chelsea Vavel assesses some of the better options available.

  • Jordan Pickford

England international Pickford is an option that was on the table for Chelsea prior to Kepa's £72m signature.

The Everton man signed an extension with the toffees at a time when the blues were linked with him, following his impressive displays at the World Cup, tying him to Merseyside until 2024.

However the right price as well as the prospect of playing Champions League football could be enough to sway both Pickford and the Everton higher-ups.

The 26-year-old has kept eight clean sheets to Kepa's six and has a save success percentage of 63.28 compared to Kepa's 55.95.

Pickford's distribution is one of his strengths, a feature that would be well suited to the slick style of play that Lampard is looking to impose.

While the fact that he averages more saves per game and has made more total saves than Kepa this campaign can be put down to the fact that he plays for a weaker side, there is no denying that the Englishman has been far more consistent than his Spanish counterpart.

  • Andre Onana

Onana's future at Ajax has looked unclear for some time, with Chelsea among several clubs linked with the Cameroon international.

The Dutch side's manager, Erik Ten Hag, confirmed that the stopper would be allowed to leave this summer should he decide to, and with his proven record performing at the top level of European football for many seasons, it is an offer than Lampard and Chelsea would be unwise to ignore.

Onana was a key part of the Ajax team that reached the Champions League final last term, knocking out holders Real Madrid in the process, as well as the team that finished runners up in the 2017 Europa League.

This term he has managed 15 clean sheets in all competitions with just 21 goals conceded in his 24 Eredivisie appearances.

At 24, Onana could have over a decade worth of top level football in him and time will tell where that is spent.

  • Jan Oblak

Oblak is widely considered the best goalkeeper in the world and given some of his displays for Atletico Madrid in the last couple of years, it is easy to see why.

When the Spanish side travelled to Anfield before the lockdown, Liverpool had 34 shots, with 11 on target, but the Slovenian's Man of the Match display earned Diego Simeone's charges a memorable victory against one of Europe's most fearsome strikeforces.

Only leaders Real Madrid have conceded fewer La Liga goals this season and Oblak's total of 14 league clean sheets is bettered only by former Chelsea man Thibaut Courtois.

The 27-year-old Slovenian would be a difficult man to pry from Simeone's grasp, but given his obvious world class quality, there would be no better man to be the base of Chelsea's spine.
