Southampton striker Danny Ings is one of six players to be nominated for Premier League player of the month.
The Englishman has been in fantastic form since the restart of the season, scoring three goals in as many games for the Saints as they have won two of their opening three matches.
He is nominated for the June award alongside Wolves’ Raul Jimenez and Connor Coady, Newcastle winger Alain Saint-Maximin, and Manchester United duo Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Martial.
A worthy nominee
Ings’ brace last weekend against Watford saw him reach the 20 goal mark in all competitions this season, a feat that has not been achieved by a Southampton player in a single since Rickie Lambert in the 2011/12 season.
The award takes into consideration the few games in March that took place before the suspension of the season due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Ings will be a strong contender for the award with his goals and assists proving the difference in the Saints’ wins against both Norwich City and Watford.
Eyes on the golden boot
Although Ings will be delighted to be nominated for this award, his eyes will be on a potential golden boot.
On 18 Premier League goals, he’s now just one goal behind the joint leaders Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Jamie Vardy, with the latter struggling to find form since the restart.
If Ings can pull it off, he will become the first Southampton player to ever win the Premier League golden boot.
Voting for the player of the month closes at 6pm on July 6, with the winner being announced at 11am on July 10.
