Brighton created plenty tonight, but they've ultimately paid for their defensive lapses.

Liverpool were too open for Jurgen Klopp's liking, but it was certainly their best attacking display since their coronation.

22:125 months ago

Game over

And that's it. The champions don't get their fourth, but they do get the win, and they move onto 92 points with four games to go.
22:115 months ago
90+6' It briefly opens up for Minamino, still looking to break his Liverpool duck. He's forced away from goal and the attack breaks down.

Salah then misses a gilt-edged headed chance for a treble at the back post.

22:105 months ago

Almost a Salah hat-trick

90+5' Liverpool are really pushing for a fourth here. Robertson's ball across the face towards Minamino is intercepted by Ryan but breaks to Salah, who's unable to squeeze it in after steadying himself.
22:085 months ago
90+4' Sadio Mane tries his luck with a cross-goal curler from range, and nearly executes it to perfection. It stays at 3-1.
22:055 months ago
90+1' Liverpool are six minutes of stoppage time away from moving closer to a record Premier League points tally.
22:055 months ago
90' Connolly's been heavily involved since his introduction and now he thinks he's through on goal before the offside flag goes up.
22:045 months ago

R

89' Joe Gomez arguably a little fortunate to escape a red card after dragging back Connolly when the Irishman nipped ahead of him once again. The covering Van Dijk probably justified Pawson's decision to show a yellow.
22:025 months ago
88' Connolly drops his shoulder and escapes the Liverpool defenders on the left of the area, but Alisson can harmlessly watch his cross go by.
22:015 months ago
87' Takumi Minamino is given a late run-out as Klopp brings off Firmino.
22:005 months ago
86' And we nearly see a fourth from that free-kick. Van Dijk directs it back across goal to compatriot Wijnaldum, but he heads over from close range.
22:005 months ago
86' Roles reversed as Lamptey is booked for a challenge on Mane.
21:595 months ago
85' Dale Stephens cleverly clips Trossard in-behind the Liverpool backline, but he lifts it well over with an outstretched leg.

Another good chance goes begging.

21:585 months ago
84' Yet again Brighton yield possession needlessly in their own half. This time Bissouma is the culprit, but Firmino's mishit ball means a deadly counter doesn't materialise.
21:555 months ago
81' Wijnaldum's awkward header back towards his own goal has to be put out on the stretch by Van Dijk. The game doesn't feel over yet.
21:545 months ago
80' A coming-together with Bissouma looks to have ended Henderson's evening. James Milner is ready to come on and take the armband.
21:525 months ago
78' Fabinho is the third Liverpool player to be shown a yellow card, this time for a late challenge on Mooy.
21:515 months ago
An agonisingly simple goal if you're Potter. Salah met Robertson's delivery at the near post virtually unopposed, and snuck into the corner. That's 19 Premier League goals  for the season.
21:505 months ago

Goal! Brighton 1-3 Liverpool

And that could be the insurance goal. Salah converts from the corner.
21:505 months ago
75' One of those moments where you don't where the ball is going to land. Mane and Robertson link-up before a cut-back to the approaching Henderson, whose deflected shot loops just wide.
21:495 months ago
74' Uncharacteristically, Alisson is left in no man's land as Brighton send in a corner. It bounces behind, letting him off.
21:455 months ago
71' So here's Potter's move. It's a triple change.

Off: Mac Allister, Gross, Propper

On: Bissouma, Mooy and Maupay

21:435 months ago
68' Craig Pawson points the players toward the touchline, which means it's time for the drinks break. A chance for the managers to impart some potentially decisive instructions.
21:385 months ago
64' Lamptey frantically tries to thwart Salah after Fabinho's defence-splitting long ball. He's shaken off, but then Webster comes across to crucially put it behind. Mane is annoyed after repeatedly calling for the pass in the middle.
21:375 months ago
63' And Mane is almost instantly into the book after catching Lamptey with an outstretched arm.
21:375 months ago
62' I did wonder if we would see Fabinho as Liverpool look to establish a firm grip on the game. It's the excellent Keita who makes way for his more defensive team-mate.

Mane for Oxlade-Chamberlain is the third Liverpool change.

21:355 months ago

Huge chance for Brighton!

61' Liverpool deal with a Brighton corner at first, but when it's sent back into area Propper's flick-on reaches a totally unmarked Dan Burn. He must equalise, but his slice spares the champions!
21:345 months ago
59' Liverpool put a slick attack together and Andrew Robertson is given the chance to cross twice, finding Henderson at the back post the second time. It's taken on the volley but caught by Ryan.
21:315 months ago
56' It's very difficult to call which net will bulge next...
21:295 months ago

Liverpool threaten a third

54' Big chance for Liverpool as Keita sets Salah away. He ghosts past Burn and has the chance to shoot from around eight yards out, but he can't find the corner.
21:275 months ago
52' Van Dijk has to come across after Brighton catch Gomez out of position, and he's able to halt Gross' charge.
21:245 months ago
50' Better from Oxlade-Chamberlain on the left. He hits a low cross into the near post, but Firmino arrives too late.
21:245 months ago
50' A confident start to the second half from Brighton. Liverpool will have plenty of defensive work to do.
21:205 months ago

Liverpool sub

Jurgen Klopp took off Joe Gomez against Man City when he picked up a first-half yellow. And after Neco Williams' early caution, he follows suit here.

Andrew Robertson is his inevitable replacement.

21:125 months ago

Player of the half

Naby Keita is showing exactly what he's all about. He's been so keen to receive the ball across the park, and created plenty of opportunities when gliding forward.

He'll be excelling in the player ratings if he keeps this up.

21:115 months ago
Both teams had six shots in that first half, directing three on target. Liverpool's greater ruthlessness has them ahead.

They'll have to tighten up in the second half, whilst still pressing high against that shaky pairing of Stephens and Propper.

21:055 months ago

Halftime

An entertaining first half ends with Liverpool in the ascendancy, but Brighton will be confident of restoring parity after the break. Stay tuned.
21:035 months ago
45+2' Stephens culpable again as Salah snatches possession for Liverpool. He finds Firmino, who then passes slightly behind Oxlade-Chamberlain. Webster deflects the 20-yard shot out for a corner.
21:025 months ago
45+2' We're into a hefty four added minutes.
21:015 months ago
45' The impressive Lamptey whips it in, and Trossard assuredly connects with his right foot to beat Alisson. It's hard to say that doesn't reflect the game.
21:005 months ago

GOAL! Brighton 1-2 Liverpool

Trossard's picked himself up, and now he's scored! Brighton back it!
20:595 months ago
44' Trossard was complaining to the referee, and now we know why. Replays show that Gomez put an arm across his body off-the-ball. Nothing doing.
20:575 months ago
42' Lamptey has made life difficult for Williams in their duel, and the Liverpool man's latest foul earns him a yellow card. Brighton have a free-kick in a good area on the right...

Gomez heads away.

20:545 months ago
39' Mohamed Salah needs an explosive game for his Golden Boot bid. Mat Ryan is rooted as he bends one from the left, but it lands wide of the post.
20:535 months ago
38' Stephens fires wide after a Brighton corner, and then Alisson looks to bypass the backtracking hosts with a quick goal kick. They're just about able to deal with it.
20:515 months ago
36' Brighton look capable of halving the deficit before half-time. It's Trossard's turn to shoot from a dangerous area, and Gomez's turn to get in the way.
20:495 months ago
34' We're seeing openings at both ends. Maupay this time dribbles into the box and looks to work the space for a  deadly finish, but his eventual effort is blocked well by Van Dijk.
20:485 months ago
33' Alexander-Arnold has been quieter than Williams so far but he enters the fray with a vintage cross from the left, which very narrowly evades Firmino and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
20:475 months ago
31' Liverpool rob possession again in the Brighton half and Oxlade-Chamberlain gives it to Firmino on the penalty spot. Under challenge, the Reds' no.9 is unable to get a clean shot away.
20:465 months ago
31' Brief heart-in-mouth moment for Henderson as he heads back to Alisson with Maupay chasing.
20:445 months ago
29' There's a real openness to this game. I'd be very surprised if we didn't see a few more goals.
20:435 months ago

Close for the hosts

28' Trossard takes it from one to the end another on the counter and cuts back from the byline, forcing Alisson and Keita to rather unconvincingly team-up to put it behind.

20:415 months ago
26' Brighton have the ball in the net but Gross, who teed-up Trossard with a low cross, is rightly flagged offside.
20:405 months ago
25' And we're now back underway. How many problems will Brighton cause before halftime?
20:385 months ago
24' We come to the first-half drinks break with Liverpool in an excellent position.
20:385 months ago
23' Henderson then has to cover for Williams, though, after he stumbles as Lamptey charges forward.
20:375 months ago
22' Williams has plenty of faith in his own ability. This time he produces a couple of step-overs and a very dangerous clipped cross, which Firmino is just underneath. Liverpool's spell of pressure fades.
20:355 months ago

Big Brighton chance

20' It should be 2-1. Maupay puts Gross in and Wijnaldum makes a mess of dealing with the German's cut-back. Trossard runs onto it looking destined to score, but the 19-year-old Williams slides in to make a vital block.
20:335 months ago
18' Brighton are actually fortunate that Lamptey was penalised for his trip on Firmino there with Liverpool sweeping upfield. Salah had played Williams into plenty of space.
20:305 months ago
15' Keita drives forward from midfield and plays Salah in down the right-hand side of the area. Ryan gathers the shot.

The midfielder has been excellent so far.

20:285 months ago
13' Van Dijk misjudges a pass and Brighton momentarily look to be in, but Gross' flashy touch winds up running through to Alisson.
20:265 months ago
12' An utterly ruthless first 10 minutes from Liverpool, who have actually looked rather tame as an attacking force in their last two matches.

Could we see a rout here, or will Brighton steady themselves after their awful start?

20:255 months ago
10' Alexis Mac Allister will need stitches here after taking a cut on the side of the head.
20:245 months ago
8' It's Keita winning it again, this time near the halfway in. From there it's passed to Firmino, who slides it forward to Salah. The scorer of the first lays it off to Henderson, and he strokes into the bottom left corner from 25 yards out. Sublime.
20:225 months ago

GOAL! Brighton 0-2 Liverpool

What a start for Liverpool, and what a goal for the captain!
20:215 months ago
6' So poor from Stephens, robbed by Keita 20 yards out. It was then a simple task for the Guinean to knock it sideways for Salah, who sidefooted past Ryan. The champions lead.
20:205 months ago

GOAL! Brighton 0-1 Liverpool

Mohamed Salah punishes a Brighton error!
20:195 months ago

Close

4' Firmino's shot is deflected just wide after Dunk's clearing header dropped for him at the edge of the box.
20:175 months ago
2' Oxlade-Chamberlain is operating on the left-wing, with Neco Williams behind him. This isn't the debutant's preferred position, so let's see how he fares.
20:155 months ago

Kick-off

Brighton start us off in the south coast drizzle.
20:125 months ago
And that's because they'll be giving the champions their latest guard of honour. Henderson leads them onto the pitch.
20:115 months ago
Brighton are the first team out as we near kick-off.
19:275 months ago

Confirmed Liverpool XI

The big news for the visitors is that Neco Williams is in for a full Premier League debut, with Andrew Robertson dropping to the bench.

Captain Jordan Henderson returns in midfield alongside Georginio Wijnaldum, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to line-up on the wing.

Team in full: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Williams; Wijnaldum, Henderson, Keita; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Salah, Firmino.

19:255 months ago

Confirmed Brighton XI

Three changes for Brighton from the win at Watford.

Bissouma, Mooy and Connolly make way for Stephens, Gross and Mac Allister.

Team in full: Ryan; Lamptey, Webster, Dunk, Burn;  Stephens, Propper; Gross, Trossard; Mac Allister, Maupay.

20:035 months ago
That's all for now, but check back an hour so before kick-off for the confirmed team news from both camps.
20:025 months ago

The head-to-head

Liverpool have won all five meetings with the Seagulls since their promotion back to the top flight in 2017, though the last three have come by a single goal.

For Brighton's last win against the Reds, you have to go back to an FA Cup tie in 1984. Graham Potter was, by my calculations, eight years old.

19:535 months ago

Last time out

Brighton gave Liverpool a rare fright when they visited Anfield at the end of November.

All three goals were scored by defenders. Virgil van Dijk netted a quickfire headed double in the first half, but after Alisson was dramatically sent off for handling the ball outside the area, Lewis Dunk slotted home a free-kick to set-up a very nervy finish.

As ever, though, Liverpool survived.

Liverpool team news

Liverpool's doubtful players would likely occupy the bench anyway.

Dejan Lovren is nursing a knock, while James Milner has a minor muscle injury.

Joel Matip's absence for the remainder of the campaign has already been confirmed.

19:475 months ago

Brighton team news

Graham Potter has a near full squad to choose from for this one. It's an enviable position to be in.

Only Jose Izquierdo (knee) has been ruled out.

19:445 months ago

Can Brighton afford to relax?

Brighton picked up a significant victory at Norwich last Saturday, moving them nine clear of the drop zone.

Neither Aston Villa nor Bournemouth look capable of bridging that gap in the small time that remains.

They are under very little pressure to profit from the visits of the top two this week.

19:415 months ago

A driving force?

Liverpool's leading source of motivation is surely the possibility of a new points record.

Victory against Aston Villa moved them onto 89 for the season, meaning they need to win four of their last five to surpass Manchester City's all-time leading tally.

19:395 months ago

What can we expect from Liverpool?

In their two outings since being crowned champions nearly a fortnight ago, Liverpool have huffed and puffed.

They were picked apart by Manchester City, though the scoreline perhaps didn't reflect the overall balance of the game, and then they took a full 70 minutes to get going against relegation-threatened Aston Villa.

Should we anticipate more of the same? Psychologically, perhaps, it's very difficult to maintain that clinical efficiency after finally getting over the line.

It could be a steady finish to a spectacular campaign.
