Tottenham's inconsistent form since the restart continued as they could only draw 0-0 with relegation strugglers Bournemouth after failing to register a shot on target.

A very poor display by Spurs was once again clouded by VAR, but this time benefiting them, when in the 90th minute Callum Wilson thought he had grabbed a crucial win in Bournemouth’s battle to avoid the drop but his scrambled effort was chalked off for handball.

However, Harry Kane will also be furious at VAR as his side should have been awarded a penalty in the 11th minute after a clumsy two-handed shove by Joshua King at a corner.

  • Story of the game

The first half was an incredibly drab affair, where the only shot on target was a long-range strike from Junior Stanislas that barely tested Hugo Lloris.

Spurs offered nothing going forward but will feel aggrieved that they were not awarded a penalty in the 11th minute.

This was when a Spurs corner was swung in towards Kane, who was then barged into by King, caused by the Bournemouth man not looking where he was going.

VAR looked but said the incident did not merit a penalty, which seemed a very harsh decision.

This aside, it was worrying woeful half for Mourinho’s men with every Spurs player, including Kane, having their average position inside their own half.

The Cherries had more of the ball and will be disappointed they didn’t test Lloris more, especially after Spurs gave them a range of cheap set pieces to hurl into the box.

Jose Mourinho showed his intent at half-time, substituting Heung Min-Son and Tanguy Ndombele on for Giovani Lo Celso and Steven Bergwijn

Despite the intensity being upped a tad, a potentially serious head injury to Bournemouth right back and former Spurs academy graduate Adam Smith, which halted the match for 13 minutes stalled any sort of momentum for both teams.

Spurs pushed on though for a late winner by collecting a lot more possession in the final third, but ultimately doing nothing noteworthy with it.

Eddie Howe’s men were the ones looking more likely to nick a winner, and even put the ball in the back of the net.

Callum Wilson, back from injury, produced an overhead kick that squeezed into the far corner - but the replays showed it was helped on it's way by King’s hand.

A dreary game then sprung into life as Harry Wilson had a golden chance to send the Cherries 1-0 up again.

King played him in with acres of space down the right-hand side, but Lloris made himself big and the Liverpool loanee couldn’t slip his shot around him.

Bournemouth ended a run of five successive defeats as they moved up a place to 18th, three points adrift of Watford who are just above the relegation zone.

A victory would have lifted Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham up to seventh but they are a place and a point below their North London rivals Arsenal in ninth ahead of Sunday’s derby.

  • Man of the match - Nathan Ake

It was a dreary performance from both sides, and so the man of the match could only fall to a player of the defence which looked less scrappy and vulnerable, and so Bournemouth's Nathan Ake has to take the pick.

The Dutchman is a transfer target for Spurs, and his performance against them will only make Mourinho more interested in acquiring his services.

Ake was tremendous from start to finish, protecting Aaron Ramsdale in goal for the home side and leading by example - a commanding performance from the centre back.
