Middlesbrough will look to pick up three more crucial points when they host Bristol City at the Riverside Stadium in their continued battle for survival in the EFL Championship.

Boro are 18th in the table, but only two points above the relegation zone, while the Robins sit in 12th on 59 points, with their hopes of reaching the play-offs all but gone.

Last time out

Middlesbrough picked up a vital 2-0 win at Millwall through goals from Britt Assombalonga and an Ashley Fletcher penalty that lifted Boro out of the bottom three.

With Dean Holden in charge for the first time in the Bristol City dugout, the Robins were 2-1 victors over Hull City thanks to a Jamie Paterson free kick in the 52nd minute.

Previous meeting

The two teams last played each other on August 31 at Ashton Gate with the game ending in a 2-2 draw. Ashley Fletcher hit the post in the 15th minute for Boro while Nathan Baker also struck the iron for Bristol City.

Kasey Palmer opened the scoring a minute before halftime, heading in Niclas Eliasson's cross to put the Robins ahead before Boro were level through a Taylor Moore own goal.

Assombalonga notched his 100th goal in the 68th minute to put the visitors in front before Tommy Rowe's header with nine minutes to play salvaged a draw for the hosts.

Team news

Daniel Ayala is the only injury concern for Middlesbrough as he will miss the game with an ankle injury. Marcus Tavernier could be called into action to attack a porous Bristol City defense.

The Robins will be without the services of the suspended Ashley Williams as well as Pedro Pereira and Nikki Maenpaa, who are both sidelined with injuries.

Baker picked up a head injury early on in the win over Hull and his availability for the contest is questionable with Zak Vyner in contention to make his debut for the club.

Possible line-ups

Middlesbrough (4-3-3): Stojanovic; Spence, Shotton, Fry, Friend; Howson, Saville, Clayton; Tavernier, Assombalonga, Fletcher.

Bristol City (3-5-2): Bentley; Kalas, Benkovic, Vyner; Hunt, Weimann, Nagy, Paterson, Dasilva; Wells, Diedhou.

Managers comments

Boro boss Neil Warnock was quick to praise the Robins, saying:

”They've got a good group of players. Similar to Middlesbrough, they've got a chairman who loves the club and wants to do well for the area. They've spent a lot of money. We know how talented they are. We're fighting for our lives and have to get something out of the game."

Bristol City interim manager Dean Holden won't focus his thoughts on possibly becoming the man in charge on a permanent basis at Ashton Gate.

"While I would like a shot at management at some point in my career, my only thought is to put smiles on the faces of our supporters", he said. "It is not about me at the moment. It is about ending the season as strongly as possible."
