Aston Villa's hopes of escaping relegation were dampened as they failed to hold onto their lead and shared a point against Everton in the Premier League

Dean Smith and his side have only managed two away victories in the league all season and were on course for their third before Theo Walcott salvaged a point for Carlo Ancelotti's team in the 87th minute.

Conor Hourihane's cross was whipped into the box from a free-kick which resulted in Ezri Konsa toe-poking the ball past Jordan Pickford. Villa scored with just over 15 minutes to play but still could not hold on.

  • Story of the game

In the opening minute, Alex Iwobi set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a lofted cross into the box. Calvert-Lewin launched himself into the air and attempted an acrobatic kick which sailed over the bar.

Everton were then forced into an early substitution as Mason Holgate was forced off through injury - this was Holgate's first start back since returning from the injury table (shin).

It was the captain, Jack Grealish, who should have done better with his effort ten minutes before half-time. His strike was wild but did take a deflection which went out for a corner.

Iwobi then fired a cross into the box and Calvert-Lewin could not react in time as it struck him on the hip and bounced away from danger.

Douglas Luiz was next on the list to fire from range - his effort, however, was always rising and failed to force Pickford into action. Everton went into half-time with zero shots on target, and Villa just the one.

Grealish had a wonderful opportunity to take the lead in the opening two minutes of the second half. His effort was dragged wide of the near post, Smith expressed his frustrations from the sideline.

Keinan Davis won a free-kick deep into Everton's half which Hourihane beautifully placed into the box. The midfielder put the ball into the mixer and Konsa got his toe to the ball to put it past Pickford for a 1-0 lead.

With under 20 minutes to play, Villa were hanging onto their lives - both literally and figuratively as they may have given themself a chance to escape relegation.

Calvert-Lewin had the equaliser on a plate for him with five minutes to play. His strike narrowly missed the goal and went out for a goal-kick which saw goalkeeper Pepe Reina fume at his defenders.

Walcott then equalised for the Toffees with three minutes to play. His header looped over Reina and forced Konsa to clear off the line which he failed to do.

  • What this means

Villa remain in the relegation zone with two fixtures remaining, however, and are four points behind Watford and West Ham United. Smith's side host Arsenal at the weekend and then travel to West Ham in the final game of the season.

Watford and West Ham do play each other on Friday evening which will mean one of them will drop points. For goal difference purposes, Villa will hope is it Watford to aid their escape. Fixtures still have to go Smith's way if his side are to even have the slimmest chance of survival.
