Some of the things you can do in 90 minutes: fly from the North East to Northern France, head out for a long bike ride, or even go out to a posh restaurant for a three-course meal.

For those watching the snore-fest between Brighton and Newcastle, that is 90 minutes they will never get back.

The game was bound to be tight, with the Seagulls only needing one more point to ensure Premier League survival and the Magpies looking to avoid four straight league defeats.

Chances were certainly at a premium in this cagey affair, with the best chance of the game falling late on to second-half substitute Andy Carroll, who headed wide from just four yards out.

Newcastle were without five of six first-team central defenders, so it meant that academy graduate Kelland Watts travelled with the squad to the AMEX Stadium.

  • Story of the game

The first chance of the game fell to Brighton - Pascal Gross' corner was headed wide by Adam Webster, the ball eventually fell to Neal Maupay on the left-hand side, whose effort struck the post - but the Frenchman was flagged for offside.

Gross delivered a free-kick from range, Lewis Dunk managed to head the ball towards goal, but Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was equal to it and made a comfortable save.

Pascal Gross was involved in more set-piece's for the Seagulls again, this time his free-kick fell wide to Leandro Trossard, whose effort flew over the bar.

Trossard managed to dribble past Miguel Almiron and Emil Krafth on the left-hand side, he played the ball into Gross who sliced his shot wide of the post.

Brighton had a big chance to break the deadlock - Matt Ritchie miskicked the ball and seemed to have collected Maupay in the process, the Frenchman regained his balance and found Trossard in the middle of the box, who fires a shot towards the near post - but Dubravka made a fine save to deny the Belgian

Newcastle, despite being second best throughout, should have opened the scoring as Jonjo Shelvey's corner was met at the front-post by Dwight Gayle, but he was unable to keep his header from going over the bar.

Newcastle brighter in the second-half, but no goal to show for it

Newcastle failed with a short corner as Ritchie was dispossessed, but the Scottish international won the ball back and delivered the ball into the middle of the box - Almiron met the cross with a shot hit with the outside of his boot and forced Brighton goalkeeper Matt Ryan into making a good save to prevent the Magpies from opening the scoring.

Danny Rose crossed the ball low on the left-hand side, it fell Ritchie who managed to get some contact on the ball - but his effort whistled wide of the post.

Trossard and substitute Solly March linked up for some quick passing on the edge of the box, the ball came to Maupay whose shot was deflected out for a corner.

Adam Webster almost opened the scoring with an audacious strike - as he won a midfield battle with Shelvey, but was unable to score an unlikely goal as Dubravka was equal to his shot by making a top save.

Just a minute later, Brighton had another good chance - this time March knocked the ball into the box, it was headed down by Dunk but Trossard could not keep shot down as it blazed over the bar.

The last chance of the game fell to Newcastle and it should have been the decider between the two teams - as Shelvey's corner was read incorrectly by goalkeeper Ryan who misjudged the ball, it left Andy Carroll with a gaping goal to aim his header, but his effort from four yards out went past the post.

Both teams will settle for a point as it meant Graham Potter's side secured Premier League survival with a game to spare, and Newcastle stopped a three-match losing streak.

There were no fans inside the AMEX Stadium today, and they probably felt fortunate that they were not there to witness it first hand.

  • Takeaways

Brighton needed a point, that is what they wanted and that is exactly what they got.

The Seagulls' game plan was evident very quickly, that stopping Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin in his tracks was key to their successes.

At times, the Frenchman was triple-marked but was always the duty of Aaron Mooy - who did an exceptional job of keeping him quiet.

The Seagulls dominated possession tonight, but it will be slightly alarming that they were unable to create many clear-cut chances against a makeshift Newcastle defence.

For Steve Bruce, tonight was about gaining no fresh injuries and stopping a losing run, they seemingly achieved that.

It certainly was not a great performance, but they ensured Neal Maupay was not a nuisance in the final third and were able to nullify the tricky play of Leandro Trossard with little effort.

Martin Dubravka has made more saves this season than any other Premier League goalkeeper, and was once again influential towards Newcastle coming away with a draw.
