Mark Byrne has left Gillingham after turning down the opportunity to try and earn a contract during pre-season.

The 31-year-old was released by manager Steve Evans in June, but was told he could try and change the boss’ mind.

Byrne missed the end of the season with Gillingham after picking up an ACL injury in December, and was told he could be offered a new deal at the club if he could prove his fitness ahead of the new campaign.

He has, though, turned down the offer.

The story

When Mark Byrne injured his ACL during a 1-0 win against Sunderland in December, many feared his Gills career was over. Out of contract at the end of the season and carrying a lengthy injury, a decision was always going to have to be made.

When it came to the retained list being announced some six months later, Byrne wasn’t offered a deal. He was given the chance to win one and prove his fitness during pre-season if he wanted to however - but he has rejected the offer and departs Priestfield after four years at the club.

Byrne’s career

After playing for Burton Albion, Barnet and Newport County amongst others, Byrne made the move to Priestifeld.

The midfielder signed for the Gills in the summer of 2016 under Justin Edinburgh, and turned into a regular quickly.

He won the ‘Player of the Year’ award for the 2017/18 season, as well as the ‘Players’ Player of the Year’, ‘Away Supporters’ Player of the Year’ and ‘Goal of the Season’ - for a long-range volley against Bristol Rovers - and many fans feared he would play higher, but he signed a new deal at Priestfield and went onto feature for another two years.

He didn’t start the first two games of Steve Evans’ reign, but quickly forced his way into the Scot’s plans and made 18 League One appearances before his injury.

In total, he made 157 appearances for the Gills, scoring 11 goals.

Reaction

On Wednesday evening, Byrne tweeted: “I’ve decided I won’t be returning for pre-season. I was disappointed with how things went after my injury but before that I really enjoyed my time at Gillingham.

“I want to thank the players and the staff I’ve worked with for the last four years at the club. I have made some great friends. I wish the gaffer and the lads all the best for the season ahead.

“A big thank you goes out to the fans. You have been brilliant to me the last four years. I gave it my all every week and I think you guys knew that.

“Now after 14 years of football in the UK, with my knee almost ready, it’s time for a new challenge at home in Ireland.

“Up the Gills.”

Gillingham’s official Twitter account posted: “Thanks for your tireless efforts and loyal service. We wish you every success for the future.”
