Northampton Town have announced the signing of left sided player Joseph Mills from Forest Green Rovers on a two-year deal.

The winger joins the League One club after spending two years at Forest Green Rovers from 2018-2020. During that time, he made 70 appearances, scoring 12 goals. He thanked everyone at Rovers in a statement on their website where he took the opportunity to say,   "goodbye and thank you to all at Forest Green Rovers, the staff, players and of course, the fans." Mills added that he felt "privileged enough to become captain and also make 'Team of the Decade' which will last long in my memory."

Early Career

Mills began his career in 2008 at Southampton where he went on loan spells to Scunthorpe United and Doncaster Rovers during his time on the south coast.

Following those unsuccessful loans, he joined Reading in 2011 and was loaned out to Burnley in 2012 who he then signed for permanently in 2013. While at Burnley he was again sent out on loan to Oldham Athletic and Shrewsbury Town.

Mills signed a contract with Oldham in 2014 where he made 45 appearances, scoring once before moving to Australian side Perth Glory in 2016. While in Australia he scored once in 44 appearances.

Having scored four goals in the first ten years of his career, Mills found form when he joined Forest Green in 2018 and scored 12 goals in 70 appearances before joining the Cobblers on Saturday.

Thoughts of the new boss

Cobblers manager Keith Curle has been keen on signing Mills and told the Northampton website:

"He has a lot of experience and is a typical wing back, he is very good defensively but he loves to get forward too.”

The Northampton boss added:

"Joseph is a very fit lad who plays with a lot of energy and, going forward, is someone who thrives on delivering balls into the area and creating opportunities for the front players."

The Cobblers are still looking to strengthen ahead of their first year in League One since they were relegated on the final day of the 2017/18 campaign.
