Gillingham have completed the signings of midfielder Jacob Mellis and defender Zech Medley.
Mellis, 29, signs on a free transfer after leaving Bolton Wanderers, whilst Medley joins on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal.
The deals
Both signings were confirmed on Monday and the Gills fans were happy to see the new faces through the door.
Mellis played for current Gills boss Steve Evans at Mansfield Town, but left the Stags in January to move to Bolton in League One.
Following Wanderers’ relegation, Mellis left the club, but now joins the Gills.
Medley, meanwhile, is just 20-years-old and tipped for a huge future. There was interest in the youngster from both the Championship and other League One clubs, but it is Priestifeld where he will be playing his football next season.
The records
Mellis began his professional career at Chelsea after joining the club for around one millions pounds from Sheffield United at the age of 16.
He featured in the Champions League for the Blues before signing for Barnsley and he’s also played for Blackpool, Bury and Mansfield.
Mellis has also represented England at youth level, and has over 300 professional appearances to his name.
Medley also began his youth career at Chelsea but moved to London rivals Arsenal in 2016.
He has played numerous Premier League 2 games for the Gunners and made his senior debut in the Europa League in November 2018.
He will be looking to achieve valuable experience of men’s football at Gillingham - it is his first loan move, and his arrival is a huge benefit for the Gills.
Reactions
Upon the arrival of Mellis, Gills boss Evans told the club website: “Jacob is a player I have really liked for a long time and he did incredibly well during my time at Mansfield - in some games he was exceptional.
“I am sure he will get the fans off their seats several times next season and I am delighted to have lured him away from two or three other clubs who were on the verge of clinching his signature.”
Mellis himself told the club YouTube channel: “I’m really happy; it all happened pretty quickly but I’m pleased to have everything signed.
“I played for the gaffer and Rayns [assistant manager Paul Raynor] at Mansfield and they got the best out of me, so when the chance came up to join them again, I wanted to do it.”
On Medley, meanwhile, Evans told the club website: “We are delighted that Zech has joined us.
“The lad has taken his time, spoken to numerous clubs and he is a superb addition.”
Medley tweeted: “Pleased to be joining Gillingham on loan! Buzzing to get the season rolling! Let’s go!”
