On this day in 2015, Southampton signed Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu from Chelsea.

Since then, the former Barcelona man has endured five different managers, two Europa League campaigns and a record-breaking season.

In that time, Romeu has played 189 times in all competitions, scoring five goals.

* Signed by Ronald Koeman

After back-to-back loan spells at Valencia and VfB Stuttgart respectively, Romeu was looking for a permanent move away from the Blues'.

Southampton was the team who came calling, with the then 23-year-old opting to join fellow Champions League winner Ryan Bertrand into making the switch from London to the South Coast.

Koeman brought in Romeu to add competition to the base of the midfield - but also to replace the outgoing Morgan Schneiderlin. With Steven Davis and Victor Wanyama already at the club, the Dutchman brought in the Spaniard as well as Jordy Classie to challenge for the two defensive midfield spots in his most used 4-2-3-1 formation.

Romeu was handed his debut three days later - coming on as a substitute in a 3-0 home loss to Everton. It wasn't a day to remember for Saints' fans on a results front but was a sign of things to come when solely focusing on the debutant, who picked up the first of his 45 yellow cards just three minutes into his first appearance.

Despite their slow start, with Southampton winning just once in their opening six fixtures, the Saints' still went on to record their best season up - finishing sixth in the league with a total of 63 points.

The midfielder made 29 league appearances that season, but struggled to keep a regular place in the team. He collected just the 12th most amount of minutes in the squad, less than both Wanyama and Davis, and just 20 minutes more than Classie.

* The 2016/17 season

For many Southampton fans, it could be considered that Romeu was the only shining light of the 2016/17 campaign.

Before the season began, Koeman departed for Everton, with key players such as Sadio ManeGraziano Pelle, and Victor Wanyama following suit and leaving an irreputable hole in the club.

Incoming manager Claude Puel switched the attack-minded philosophy of the club in favour of a possession style. The Frenchman was never expected to replicate the results of his predecessor, but dropping two places and 17 points from the previous campaign took its tole, with a Carabao Cup Final place still not enough to keep his place in charge.

Despite a drop in performance as a team, Romeu had his best season in a Southampton shirt.

Sitting at the base of a 4-1-2-1-2 formation, the 28-year-old was instructed to stay in front of the back four and act as the protector to break up the play.

In this time, Romeu collected the most outfield minutes in the squad, as well as completing 3.3 tackles (fourth in the league), 2.5 interceptions (eighth in the league) and 1.9 clearances.

All three statistics combined to give him his highest defensive numbers in his career to date, with his output similar to Wilfred Ndidi in the 2019/20 campaign.

His performances were rewarded at the end of the season award ceremony, with Romeu collecting both Fans' Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season.

* Model Professional

Although the Spaniard has played at least 30 games in all but one of his five seasons at Southampton (when he played 29 times), Romeu has not always been a regular starter.

The former Chelsea man was a regular under former managers Koeman, Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino, but struggled to nail down a place in the side when Mark Hughes took the job permanently at the start of the 2018/19 season.

The midfielder started just four of the Saints' 14 opening games, with the Welsh manager preferring the combination of Mario Lemina and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the centre.

frustrated with his lack of minutes up until late November, Romeu requested game time with the U23 side, allowing to stay sharp and match fit so that he was ready when his next opportunity in the first team came.

The chance arrived just two weeks later. After a poor run of results, Hughes was replaced with current boss Ralph Hasenhuttl. The Austrian was quite clearly impressed with Romeu, starting him in all but two of the remaining 22 games, giving him the captains armband on four occasions.

 The former Espanyol youth player continued his run in the team at the start of the 2019/20 season but was axed when Hasenhuttl changed his formation to 4-2-2-2, opting to play Hojbjerg and James Ward-Prowse instead of Romeu.

This once again forced the Spaniard to watch from the bench from late November, starting just one game out of a possible 19 games until starting each of the last seven games at the end of the season.

Talking about Romeu, manager Hasenhuttl said: "It is fantastic from my side that Ori comes to me and says, 'Coach I didn't play so much in the last time I need a game' - it's fantastic".

He added: "It shows what an unbelievable professional he is. To be honest I've never seen anyone like him - professional wise. It's fantastic."
