The draw for Leeds United's first-ever EFL Trophy campaign has been revealed with the Whites placed in the Northern Section in  Group G alongside Accrington Stanley, Barrow and Blackpool.

The club's Under-21 squad has achieved Category One status for the first time and were granted entry into the competition on that basis. All three games will take place away from Elland Road.

How Leeds fared during pandemic-shortened season

The Whites finished third in the table, but were crowned champions after the points-per-game rule was applied. Highlights included a 6-0 thrashing of Watford at home, which extended their unbeaten run to five games to start the season.

After a stretch of six matches without a victory, Leeds closed the season with just two defeats in their last 15, their last match being a 1-1 draw at Oakwell on March 9th before the league shut down due to COVID-19.

A look at the opposition

Blackpool have had the most success of any of Leeds' three opponents, having won the competition twice in the 2001-02 and 2003-04 season. Accrington Stanley have never won the tournament while Barrow are participating for the first time after being promoted from the National League.

How the competition works

As part of the restructuring of the competition in 2016-17, formerly known as the EFL Cup, 64 teams enter the competition, 48 from EFL League One and EFL League Two and 16 Premier League and EFL Championship Under-23 or academy sides that are invited.
