Brighton & Hove Albion have been handed a major boost with the re-signing of defender Lewis Dunk on a five-year contract that sees him remain in a Seagulls shirt through the 2024/25 season.

Having been linked with a potential transfer to the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester City, the 28-year old has chosen to remain with the South Coast club he has made over 300 appearances for.

'The aim now is to build on a record-breaking Premier League season'

The Seagulls captain is thrilled to return to the AMEX Stadium, stating to the club's official website that "I'm delighted to have signed a new contract. The aim now is to build on a record Premier League season and help the club continue its recent progress over the next five years.

"Playing out in the back and being good in possession has been a big part of my game since I was in the youth setup - we were taught to play that way. I have always known that I can play that way and that last year I think showed there is a lot more to my game than just sticking my in the way of the ball.

"My defensive game is something I pride myself on, to make sure we're not conceding goals. But the possession side is something I know I can add to the team."

'Last season was a complete change'

When Graham Potter came in and took charge of the club, he changed the entire structure of the team, giving Dunk added responsibility.

"Last season was a complete change", he said. "The new manager came in and changed training, the rules, style of play and philosophy. It took some getting used to but we started quite well but then we had our Christmas jitters.

"Lockdown came at a good time because everyone was writing us off. We worked hard during the break, returned, turned things around and it was a good season in the end."

'The Arsenal game was significant'

With Albion perilously close to the relegation zone following the restart, Dunk scored the equalizer against Arsenal before Neal Maupay won it in a 2-1 victory that started a run of 12 points over their final nine games to see them finish on 41.

"The Arsenal game was significant and helped keep us in the Premier League, that gave us confidence", he said. "When you go so long without winning, the pressure builds and builds. But after that Arsenal result, we knew we could do it, having been a goal and getting a winner in the last minute.

"The most frustrating thing is the place would have erupted as it was one of the biggest goals in the history of the AMEX. The fans weren't there to enjoy it. I'm sure they enjoyed it at home, but it's not the same as being in the stadium and celebrating after the final whistle. Hopefully they can come back soon when it is safe to do so."

Potter: 'we're absolutely delighted'

Potter said "we're absolutely delighted that Lewis has made this long-term commitment to the club. It's fantastic news for everyone: the club, the supporters, the team and myself.

"Since I came to the club he's been a joy to work with and he's a top player. We are very lucky to have him. I think his role as captain is one he's grown into and one he will do better and better for the next few years.

"He leads by example on the pitch and a good lad off it - a delight to work with. We're all determined to push on and establish the club in the Premier League and I'm really pleased Lewis will be with us on this journey."
