Eoin Doyle's impressive goalscoring exploits for Swindon Town in their title-winning campaign last season made him the perfect pick for the League Two Player of the Season award.

It was most definitely the most successful campaign for the Irishman who has had an eventful career, which has seen him play for seven different EFL clubs after moving to England from Scottish side Hibernian in 2013.

Doyle’s redemption at Swindon

Doyle impressed for Bradford City in the 2018/19 campaign despite the team being relegated from League One, which attracted the interest of the Robins, who initially signed him on loan.

Between 12 October and 26 December, Doyle scored in 11 consecutive league games, the first player to do so in England’s top four leagues since Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy in 2015.

This convinced Swindon to sign him permanently in January and he finished way clear as top scorer in League Two as his 25 goals came in just 34 games before the season lockdown in March.

Despite helping Swindon to promotion, the 32-year-old decided to return to the fourth tier for next season with a move to relegated Bolton Wanderers and will look to repeat his impressive goalscoring feat this season.

Best performance

Back in October, the striker scored a magnificent hat-trick away at Crawley Town in horrible weather conditions, which more than anything proved his resolve as forward.

In lashing rain and swirling wind Doyle’s treble helped his side to a 4-0 win that day, with the second of his three being the pick of the bunch as he dived to head the ball into the top left corner of the net.

Doyle’s exploits took his total to 13 goals in 13 League Two games for Swindon at that point in the season and helped Richie Wellens’ side make it eight wins from 16 League Two games.

Best goal

The best of the Irish frontman’s 25 was probably his last-gasp winner against Stevenage, which ended a four-game winless run for his side.

The striker-controlled a cross from the byline on the right with his chest in the centre of the box and rifled a half-volley into the bottom right corner of the net with the utmost composure and technique.

That goal was the epitome of his season in which he showcased his abilities as a natural finisher as well as his positional awareness to get into the right spaces to score goals.

Can he do more of the same for Bolton?

Bolton, who began last season in danger of no longer existing as a football club, finished bottom of League One when the season was finally ended in June, on a points-per-game basis.

They scored just 27 times in 34 league games this season - the second-lowest total in the EFL. Only League Two backmarkers Stevenage (24) have scored less, meaning the addition of a serial goal-getter such as Doyle will be a massive boost next season.

He will be without his partner in crime from last season, Jerry Yates, who he combined with to score close to two-thirds of Swindon’s goals, but the absence of his strike partner is unlikely to stop the 32-year-old next season.
