Burnley began their pre-season with a bit of a splutter on Saturday, with concurrent games against Tranmere Rovers and Shrewsbury Town.

The split sides saw mixed results, with the first side beating Tranmere 3-0, whilst the second side fell to a 2-1 defeat to League One Shrewsbury.

Sean Dyche watched on as Burnley strolled to a first win of pre-season against Tranmere .

A selection of Under 23 players were drafted into the two teams as a threadbare Burnley squad was hampered with more injuries to first team players.

And one youngster who particularly impressed was centre-back Bobby Thomas.

Thomas grabbed the second goal of the game right on the stroke of half time, after Matej Vydra had opened the scoring earlier on.

Erik Pieters put the ball on a plate for the Czech Republic international who finished smartly.

Jimmy Dunne played alongside Thomas at the back in the absence of Ben Mee and he headed the ball back across goal from a corner for his partner to head into the bottom corner.

Tranmere rarely ventured forward, leaving Bailey Peacock-Farrell with little to do in his first game after signing a new deal with the club.

And just after an hour, Johann Berg Gudmundsson made sure of the win, after Pieters found the Icelandic midfielder.

  • Burnley 1-2 Shrewsbury Town

The second game at Barnfield Training Centre did not go as according to plan, as Burnley paid for the price for a poor start in a defeat to Shrewsbury Town of League One.

Scott High powered a volley past Nick Pope before Shaun Whalley made it 2-0 when he finished of a lovely move inside the opening 12 minutes.

Chris Wood scored from the spot after his partner for the afternoon, Under 23’s striker Max Thompson, was felled inside the box.

Burnley were dominant throughout the rest of the contest, but couldn’t break down the resolute Town defence.

Mace Goodridge saw an effort blocked on the line in the first half before Charlie Taylor headed a Dwight McNeil set piece wide of the mark.

The Shrews keeper, Harry Burgoyne,made a string of saves throughout the afternoon as the League One outfit held on for a good win.

Burnley are next in pre-season action on Tuesday, as they travel to Deepdale to take on Preston North-End.
