West Ham United experienced a disappointing campaign last season winning just five games all season as well as being humiliated against Manchester City 5-0 and Chelsea 8-0.

However, with the addition of Grace Fisk, they should be a lot more reliable and less leaky at the back heading into the 2020/21 season.

With all teams in the WSL making some massive signings this summer with world-class players making the move to England, the Hammers will have to eradicate their inconsistency and hope their players can realise their potential.

With two London derbies to open the new campaign with West Ham will be looking to make a positive start and show signs of significant improvement.

Last season

The Hammers headed into the 2019/20 season with a squad capable of solidifying a mid-table position and looking ahead to improving their squad.

They only managed five wins all season which was below expectations, considering how close they finished to going down with the lack of quality and investment in the bottom two teams.

Adriana Leon was their top scorer last season with just five goals and with problems in front of goal as well as the back it is easy to see how they struggled so much.

With the signing of Fisk the Hammers can expect to see an improved defence and being more compact at the back, with perhaps a switch to three at the back more suited now. Gilly Flaherty is the rock at the back and the Hammers' leader. With Fisk and Maz Pacheco adding youth and energy to the backline could be a success.

Transfer business

It was an accomplished and successful window for the Hammers with some shrewd business going under the radar as well as some big-name signings to change their team.

Fisk will get her first full season with the Hammers after making just the five appearances before Covid-19 forced all football to stop.

However, the big signing that has excited Hammers fans the most is Rachel Daly. She comes with a wealth of experience both in domestic football and on the international stage. Daly's versatility to play all across the front line predominantly will be great for West Ham.

An attacking line up containing Leona, Alisha Lehman, Daly and Katerina Svitkova is frightening which should fix the problems of last seasons goal-shy attack.

Daly is fresh off the back of winning the NWSL Challenge Cup and Svitkova has won five domestic league titles for Slavia Prague which should bring a winning mentality to the side in tough games.

Player to watch out for

Everything was thrown upside down when West Ham announced the signing of Daly until the end of the year. It is almost impossible to look past the Houston Dash captain who will be the standout player for the Hammers.

Her deadly instinct in the final third will be something West Ham missed all last season and if Lehman can maximise her potential and step up to be more clinical in the final third.

Daly can be effective out wide supplying crosses and creating chances with her pace and killer eye for a pass as well operating as the main striker.

Her pace allows her to get in behind defences and get them running towards their own goal which will allow their defence an outlet to relieve some pressure and push up higher.

Predicted finish

West Ham have had a good transfer window and had time to reflect and improve on a disappointing season last time out. However, all teams have had equally, if not better windows than the Hammers but if they can become more disciplined at the back and take their chances they could be a force in the WSL.

It seems to it may be another season if frustrations, but one not of ability on the pitch but one of how large the gap is between West Ham and the top five, maybe six this season.

They could find success within the cup competitions, however, if they aim for glory in the Continental Cup or the FA Cup with their new squad depth and player ability they could make a serious challenge in one-off game competitions.
