Leicester City are on the verge of making their second signing of the summer, with Cengiz Under of AS Roma expected to move on loan to the King Power Stadium until the end of the season.
The news, which was broken earlier this afternoon by transfer experts Fabrizio Romano and John Percy, states that the Turkey international will swap Serie A for the Premier League on a season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy clause next season.
Under is highly-rated by staff at the Italian giants however an injury-hit campaign last season means that the 23-year-old has fallen down the pecking order and a move to the Foxes is seen as a chance to reignite his career.
The Transfer Details
It seems like Brendan Rodgers will finally be getting one of his most desired items on his transfer window shopping list this summer, with the impending arrival of Under.
The Northern Irishman has stated multiple times publicly about wanting to improve his attacking quality, and in Under there is undoubted potential.
It has been reported that the 23-year-old has already agreed personal terms as well as a contract which will last until 2025. The deal will initially be a loan deal, however the transfer will see the Foxes pay a fee in the region of £24 million at the end of the season.
Leicester's pursuit of Under comes after a failed attempt to lure Francisco Trincao from Barcelona however Rodgers is likely to be more than happy to bring in some attacking quality.
Under's career path
The 23-year-old made a name for himself at Turkish Super Lig side Istanbul Basaksehir FK where he made 43 appearances, scoring nine times before his performances earned him a move to Roma.
Arriving in 2017, Under has gone on to make 88 appearances, with 17 goals and 12 assists to his name, but an injury-hit 2019/2020 campaign restricted him to just 18 appearances and has now led to him falling out of favour under manager Paulo Fonseca.
Despite being relatively young still, Under is an experienced professional having featured in the Champions League as well as being a fully fledged international.
Under has 21 international caps under his belt for Turkey and is also a teammate and close friend of Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu who could well have had a role to play in the 23-year-old's move to the East Midlands.
What does this mean for other players
The arrival of a new winger at the club may well spell the end of the road for some of the wingers already on the books at Leicester.
Under has what Rodgers loves in his wingers in that he usually operates on the right side of the pitch, but is left-footed so can cut in onto his stronger foot, which could see him become a first-team regular.
Harvey Barnes is likely to still be the first choice out on the left-hand side, however Ayoze Perez could now become more of a rotation or even challenge James Maddison for a spot as the number 10 in the side.
For Demarai Gray and Mark Albrighton however this could come as a bitter blow and even signal the end of their Leicester careers. Whilst Albrighton has been a tremendous servant to the club, and is arguably still a solid back-up option he isn't regarded as a starter anymore.
Gray on the other hand has failed to live up to the potential he showed whilst at Birmingham City. Now 24, he is no longer considered a young prospect, and his record during his time at Leicester is underwhelming and this year may well be the last season we see Gray as a part of Rodgers' plans.
