Southampton crashed out of the second round of the Carabao Cup last night as the Saints suffered a 2-0 defeat against Brentford on home soil.

The Bees opened the scoring in the 40th with midfielder Christian Norgaard breaking the stalemate before Josh DaSilva added a second only six minutes later.

West Brom away is the reward for last seasons Championship play-off finalist's endeavors on the South Coast.

Both sides went into the game having both suffered opening day defeats against Crystal Palace and Birmingham respectively.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made only one change from the side which suffered opening day defeat against Crystal Palace as youngster Nathan Tella earned a place in the lineup - replacing Will Smallbone.

With only the one solitary change Hasenhuttl was eager to get back into the fashion in which they had ended last season, and why he picked a strong lineup despite many other clubs in the competition fielding far inferior sides to their opening league matches.

Disappointing night for Southampton

The pairing of Danny Ings and Che Adams was the first to catch the eye with both linking up well only for Ings unable to catch the pace of a well-placed pass in the opening stages.

Only shortly after Alex McCarthy found himself in the book after fouling Tarique Fosu looking to latch onto a long ball.

The Saints goalkeeper was then nearly caught off his line in the ninth minute as Bryan Mbeumo scooped up his loose pass only for Jack Stephens to volley clear.

Southampton then had a golden chance of their own but last seasons top-goalscorer failed to capitalise on Ryan Bertrand's pinpoint cross and could only shoot wide.

Half chances came for both sides before Nørgaard gave the visitors the lead five minutes before half time, heading past McCarthy from a corner.

Then in the first minute of injury time Brentford struck again as some decent passing unlocked the Saints defence before a simple side-foot finish for DaSilva

After the break Saints' Ings and Adam, both attempted to reduce the deficit with a decent chance each but they could only fire wide or at Luke Daniels in goal for Brentford.

Saints made their first change 70 minutes in as Moussa Djenepo replace Redmond. Shane Long was also introduced late on, and made an impact but not enough to claw even one consolation goal back.

Attention towards Sunday

A disappointing night for the Saints who have now lost their opening two games and attention will no doubt now turn to Sunday as Southampton prepare to face off against Jose Mourinho's Tottenham at St. Mary's.
