VAVEL's prediction

Courtesy of VAVEL's Jonny Bentley:

It's the first game of the season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but it might not be a stroll.

Palace surprised a few punters with a hard fought victory over Southampton. Roy Hodgson’s emphasis on shape and structure was key to his team holding onto victory. Cheikhou Kouyate was excellent as a makeshift central defender.

The Red Devils have brought in Donny van de Beek but many supporters still feel they are a few players short of pushing on from last season’s third-placed finish. Nonetheless, United should be able to make a strong start to the season with the same group that sealed a Champions League slot post-restart.

Prediction: 2-0

10:262 months ago

Predicted line-ups

Manchester United: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Van de Beek, Pogba; James, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.

Palace: Guaita; Ward, Kouyate, Dann, Mitchell; Eze, McCarthy, McArthur, Zaha; Batshuayi, Ayew.

Roy Hodgson: Pre-match comments

“We are starting to get players back from injury. Mamadou is the latest to be back. Benteke and Wickham took part in today’s session and we hope that Jaïro will return tomorrow. Michy Batshuayi has added enormous competition to the attacking line. Zaha did well up there on Saturday.”

“I’m certain Manchester United are going to have a good season. Ole Gunnar Solskjær will be pleased with the job he’s done so far. Manchester United have progressed since our victory at Old Trafford last season. They’ve added some quality players.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjær: Pre-match comments

“We can go into the new season with confidence with the way we finished last season. That showed what we’re capable of. We developed throughout the season and we need to keep developing and we’ve shown the potential. We need more consistency, but I think with a year’s more experience we should be getting that consistency. It’s a group that I don’t want to say what they cannot do. I think they can go as far as they want.”

“Fans will always want the best possible team to watch, the best possible Man United team. That’s the passion we want. With the history we’ve had, we can look back 10/20 years, you look back at the great players we’ve had. Since Sir Alex left we’ve been averaging fifth, but last year we got third which was a big step forward."

Palace team news

Roy Hodgson will still be without a number of long term absentees; Nathan Ferguson, Gary Cahill, Patrick Van-Aanholt and James Tomkins are all unavailable for selection.

Eberechi Eze and Michy Batshuayi are both set to make their first starts of the season, after the pair completed a full 90 minutes against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Manchester United team news

Leading up to the match it was possible that United would be without 11 key players for their opening league fixture.

However it looks like Ole Gunnar Solskjær has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood are both able to play following their Coronavirus isolation periods.

Donny Van de Beek is set to make his professional Manchester United debut.

Can Palace repeat history?

In this fixture last season, the Eagles made their own piece of history as Roy Hodgson's side secured the first ever Premier League win at Old Trafford for the south Londoners.

Palace have invested into the playing staff over the summer window, with Michy Batshuayi, Eberechi Eze and Nathan Ferguson joining Roy Hodgson's last dance.

Kick-off for Manchester United's season!

Due to their Europa League commitments, Manchester United kick-off the 2020/21 Premier League campaign a week later.

The summer transfer business so far has caused much frustration amongst the United faithful. In spite of the fact The Red Devils secured the services of Donny van de Beek, and look to be closing in on left-back, Alex Telles, United fans are hungry for more, in order to resume the progression that has been seen under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.
