The 2-0 loss against Liverpool was another example of the goalkeeping frailties at Chelsea Football Club with Kepa Arrizabalaga

The score was 1-0, Chelsea were still in the game when Sadio Mane opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge

A routine back pass to the Spaniard quickly turned into an embarrassing moment a few minutes later.

Kepa attempted to pass the ball out, it was intercepted by Mane who grabbed his second after capitalising on the mistake.

The number one position was always a concern heading into this season. The frustrating mistake against Liverpool has finally sealed the final nail in the coffin.

Competitive competition

Edouard Mendy is on his way to Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard will have a new goalkeeper at his disposal.

The Senegalese shot stopper plays for Rennes in France. The 28-year-old is set for his biggest career move.

The switch to West London will come with intense pressure. Due to the current frailties, he will be expected to take the number one jersey and erase the problems between the sticks.

Time to lay off Kepa

It is now time to lay off Kepa. His ability has been questioned on many occasions now since his arrival in 2018. His first season was applaudable. It is the latter two that has caused for concern.

The record-breaking fee goalkeeper will be out of the limelight once Mendy officially signs. It should not take this though.

He is still a Chelsea player. Every club should back the players. The fans are the voice, this means their opinion is important.

Kepa is now known as a ‘flop.’ Despite under performing in blue, he still played an integral part in the club winning the Europa League under Maurizio Sarri in 2018/19.

The SW6 club have been blessed with goalkeepers for a long time. Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois stand out. The former is now the club’s technical director.

This should go down as a transfer that has not worked as expected. There should not be abuse being thrown his way.

Where does his future lay?

The future for Kepa is uncertain. Does he stay, does he go? The obvious answer to many is to sell him. It is not as easy as that. He was gifted a seven-year contract upon signing in 2018. He has five years left.

One of the best options is to loan him out, maybe back to Spain, where he made a name for himself.

Given the temporary move away is successful, a club could buy him out of Stamford Bridge.

Whatever the future holds, it is almost certain Chelsea will make a loss on the Spanish keeper.

The £70million price tag is unlikely to be recouped after his recent performances for his club.
