Liverpool were in a dominant mood as they laid down an early marker regarding just who are the team to beat still in the Premier League

After much of the summer conjecture surrounding the big-spending Chelsea, Klopp's men controlled much of the clash as the Reds made it two wins from two to start their title defence.

The key talking point form the first half came late on when Blues' defender Andreas Christensen was dismissed for hauling down Sadio Mane just as he was about to reach a pass from Jordan Henderson

New arrival Thiago Alcantara came on for the Liverpool captain as an injury precaution at the break as the visitors took further control with their numerical advantage.

Mane scored twice in quick succession to secure all three points for the champions who were in no mood to relent.

Frank Lampard's men were given a chance to get back into the contest from the penalty spot, but for Alisson Becker to save Jorginho's effort.

Here's what the Liverpool boss made of the away win when he spoke during his post-match press conference...

  • On the performance

“I liked this performance a lot. Three points, we showed everyone we are ready. For ourselves to just really feel the way we play and improve. We can be successful if we just continue to grow on the pitch. Chelsea away will always be one of the most difficult games we play.”

  • On the sending off

''I saw the sending-off only in the situation. I see Christensen's arms around Sadio, so I thought in that moment it's a sending-off, to be honest, but I didn't see it back since then. So if you saw it differently or have another opinion, I respect that.''

  • On his new signing

“We signed Thiago for different reasons and only one of them is [for] against deep-defending sides. We improved in that department a lot, I have to say, with all of the players who were already there before. But, yes, it is something that suits him, it is natural to him.”

  • A message to the rest of the league?

''I liked the performance a lot. We are not playing for two things: three points and showing everybody 'you better be ready when we arrive' or whatever. That is not us. The next game will be incredibly difficult immediately for their own reasons because Arsenal are obviously flying for a few months already.''

  • On the game's star performers

''Fabinho, yes! If Sadio wouldn't have scored two goals, I think Fab would be a proper contender for Man of the Match. I loved his performance, he played outstanding. He helped us a lot with the ball and in defending as well, so yes, a proper performance.

Earlier on during his immediate match reaction, Klopp was asked by Sky Sports, just how good a week it has been for the club.

''With both games and all in between, yeah. We have had a lot of good weeks now and in the past, but this one is a good one as well, I get that.''

Liverpool will now face Arsenal in the Premier League at Anfield next Monday night. However, before that clash, they travel to League One Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup on Thursday.
