Chelsea’s defence was one of the club’s biggest talking points last season.

The Blues conceded 54 goals in the Premier League, spurring them to secure the signings of Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell during the transfer window.

Despite the worries about the backline, there was one player who stepped up to the plate when needed.

Fikayo Tomori was another one of Chelsea’s academy prospects who made a big impact in the team, but his future at the club has an air of uncertainty over it.

Despite being subbed on at halftime in the 2-0 loss at home to Liverpool after Andreas Christensen’s red card, there has been rumours of the young defender being loaned out.

VAVEL Chelsea looks into Tomori’s Blues career so far and whether or not he will stay at the club this season.

  • Breakthrough star

Tomori made his first start for Chelsea in the 2-2 draw with Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge last season.

He then started the next league game away at Wolves, where he scored Chelsea’s Goal of the Season in the Blues’ 5-2 win.

His impressive start to life in the Chelsea first team earned him more and more starts as the season progressed.

However, his last appearance in a blue shirt for the campaign came against Bournemouth away where he was subbed off after 64 minutes of action.

With 22 appearances under his belt, Tomori made a good impression in his first season.

  • Potential loan spell?

Despite his impressive performances, there have been rumours of a potential loan move away from Chelsea for the 22-year-old.

According to Sky Sports, Everton are close to securing Tomori on a season-long loan.

However, he was named in Chelsea’s squad for the Liverpool game ahead of Antonio Rudiger, who made regular appearances last season.

Fikayo was subbed on for Kai Havertz after Christensen was sent off and despite Chelsea conceding twice, the defender was in fine form for Frank Lampard’s side.

There is hope that his appearance on Sunday will be enough for him to stay at the club for the rest of the season, rather than gaining experience elsewhere.

Despite the arrival of recent Champions League finalist Silva, he certainly has the quality and fight within him to compete for a first team spot.

It is now up to him to perform when it matters and continue his impressive start to life at Chelsea.
