After every Gameweek over the course of the 2020/21 season, we’ll ask the highest-scorer in VAVEL’s in-house Premier League Fantasy Football League for their reflections.

This week, it’s Daniel Huggins, who scored 95 points.

Kane and Son combine to score 45 points between them

Despite Tottenham’s slow start against a high-pressing Southampton side, dynamic duo Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son bailed the North London side out with five goals between them.

The demolition, led by Korean star Son (£9.0m) who scored four, saw Kane (£10.5m) get in the act himself with a goal as well as assists for all four of his strike partner’s goals.

Son’s 24 points was the highest in the league this week, and Kane followed up in second place with 21 points.

The duo are at the centre of a mass transfer dilemma for a high percentage of players before Gameweek 3, as Kane’s pinpoint passing and Son’s emphatic finishing and pace will most probably give Newcastle issues on Sunday.

Danny Ings (£8.4m) managed a respectable 11 points thanks to his two goals for Southampton, while Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m), who has been selected by 10.3% of players, managed three points thanks to his assist.

  • Villa defenders score big with commanding performances

Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings controlled the back-line as Aston Villa managed an impressive 1-0 victory at home to Sheffield United.

Konsa (£4.5m) scored the only goal of the game and managed a very solid 15 points to be the highest-scoring defender of the game week.

The 22-year-old centre-back forged an impressive partnership with England international Mings (£5.0m), who also made it into the FPL Team of the Week with a solid ten points.

The Villa pair gave an exemplary defensive performance, dominating in the air and on the ground in their own half, contrary to Sheffield United’s John Egan (£5.0m) who was sent off after denying Ollie Watkins a goal-scoring opportunity.

Egan was given -2 points on FPL and that statistic will not have been good news for just under 10% of players, including myself, who have the Irish international in their teams.

  • Castagne continues his superb start for the Foxes

Leicester’s summer arrival from Atalanta, Timothy Castagne (£5.6m), is currently the highest-scoring defender in total with 23 points.

The Belgian added a further 9 points against Burnley as his deflected cross put Leicester in front.

Former Luton Town fan favourite James Justin (£4.6m), is the third-highest scoring defender on FPL with 16 points in total, after adding another 7 points in Gameweek 2 thanks to a goal from him to put Leicester 3-1 up.

At the low combined price of £10.2m, it’s hard not to see why almost 30% of players have either or both in their teams.

The pair of wing-backs have been integral to the Foxes' fantastic start to the season, and it will be interesting to see if both of them can keep Ricardo Pereira out of the side when the Portuguese right-back is fully fit again.

  • Calvert-Lewin, Maupay and Bamford impress

Everton have begun the season in impressive form, first beating Tottenham 1-0 and then by putting West Brom away 5-2.

Spearheaded by Dominic Calvert Lewin (£7.2m), Richarlison (£8.0m) and star signing James Rodriguez (£7.5m), the Toffees have looked very dangerous in attack in both games.

Calvert-Lewin managed 17 points against West Brom, making his way into the Gameweek 2 Team of the Week, by scoring a hat-trick to take his total for the season so far to four.

While it has been the striker grabbing the headlines, Rodriguez has slid into the Everton side comfortably and has oozed class for the new-look north west team managed by a world-class Head Coach in Carlo Ancelotti.

Brighton's Neal Maupay (£6.5m) almost replicated that feat, as he scored 16 points thanks to two goals and one assist as his side beat Newcastle away from home 3-0.

The only player separating Maupay from the top 3 highest scoring strikers this season so far is Leeds' Patrick Bamford (£5.7m) who has begun the season brilliantly, scoring a total of 21 points.

The Englishman only just missed out on the Gameweek 2 Team of the Week after a man-of-the-match performance which saw him grab one goal and two assists, scoring 14 points in the process.

His form comes as a huge surprise to many, as there were a significant number of fans, including Leeds fans, who were writing off the striker's chances to succeed in the Premier League.
