Southampton have kicked off their 2020/21 season with three loses against Crystal Palace, Tottenham, and Brentford in all competitions - despite ending last season as the Premier League's most inform team.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has said he expects "better" from his side ahead of their clash against Burnley at Turf Moor this weekend.

The Austrian did admit he was critical of his side following their 5-2 defeat at the hands of Tottenham last weekend.

Speaking with Southampton's official website, he said: "We are a little bit critical when we watch our performances because we know the level that we have shown at the end of last season,

"We are not that happy to see us playing – even in the first half (against Tottenham), when we definitely didn’t play bad, was still not the way we can play. We can still be calmer and more efficient in our game with the ball,

“In the second half, there was a good start but after a big chance for us we conceded the second goal in a much too easy way and then we stopped defending,

“This is something I haven’t seen for a long time. We suddenly lost our way completely and mentally were not strong enough to fight back.”

  • “We have to show we are better”

Having lost their way against Tottenham, Southampton will have to be ready to go to battle again having not managed to come away with the full three points in any of their last seven games against Burnley.

While Turf Moor is a tough place to go it presents a great opportunity for Saints to pick up their first points of the season ahead of their last match against West Brom before the October international break - and why Hasenhuttl demands better, otherwise it could be a disastrous start.

He added: "For us, it’s a clear message to do it better and show up,

“We have to show that we are better than we have shown in the first two games. To win there (Turf Moor) is not easy, but we will try.”
