Wolves have opened talks to recruit Atletico Madrid winger Thomas Lemar to the club according to Le10 Sport.

Lemar has not been a consistent regular for Diego Simeone's side since joining in the summer of 2018, and according to the Birmingham Mail, he has rejected a move to FC Porto for the chance to test himself in the Premier League.

The 24-year-old was linked with a move to the Wanderers back in January, but Nuno Espirito Santo decided to purchase forward Daniel Podence for £16.9 million.

Could he be a good replacement for Jota?

With Wolves losing forward Diogo Jota to Liverpool for £41 million last week, consequently, a replacement for the Portuguese will be towards the top of Santo's priority list.

Before being sold, Jota had failed to feature for the Wanderers in the new campaign with Podence being selected ahead of him after showing to impress on the left-hand side.

Therefore, there is no doubt that Lemar would have to work for a starting spot, but this competition for places is something that Nuno would welcome.

He has previously made it clear that his squad's depth must be improved if they wish to challenge and contend for Champions League football on a regular basis.

If brought in, Wolves undoubtedly would be making a big statement to the rest of the league in terms of what their intent is, due to the calibre of player that they would be recruiting.

However, there would also be pressure on him to perform and on top of the other signings that Wolves have already brought in,  there would be further added pressure for the Wanderers to finish in a European spot come to the end of the campaign.

Is the completion of the deal realistic?

With the potential that Lemar still obtains and the fact that he moved to Spain from Monaco for around £63 million two years ago, is a suggestion that it would likely take a hefty sum to allow Simeone's side to release the winger.

With Wolves already spending nearly £74 million with 10 days to go until the closure of the transfer window, the club may not want to splash the cash this summer in order to bring Lemar to the club.

However, the club has made recouped £71 million from the sales of Helder Costa, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota, meaning that there would be the possibility of making Lemar their sixth first-team signing of the summer.

Consequently, with this in mind, if the Wolves owners do intend to balance the books by the end of the transfer window, it will be unlikely that a deal for the 24- year- old winger will go ahead.
