Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce disagreed with the last-minute penalty decision which helped his side salvage a point at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Tottenham controlled the game from start to finish and looked to be heading for a routine three points, but a late VAR call gifted the Magpies the chance to snatch an unlikely away point.

Following Eric Dier's handball deep into stoppage time, Callum Wilson stepped up to fire home from 12-yards but despite this positive result in North London Bruce struggle to take much heart given the controversial circumstances.

A harsh penalty

"It's the interpretation of the new handball rule which is totally nonsense," Bruce said.

"I think that coaches, managers and players need to lobby the Premier League and said where's this come from and can we do something about it because that's not right.

"There was one where Crystal Palace got punished and then we got lucky with this one but it's not right."

Praise elsewhere

Despite feeling that his team were fortunate to take anything from the game, Bruce had to give praise where it was needed.

Karl Darlow was only supposed to be playing in goal for the short term following Martin Dubravka's injury, however the former Nottingham Forest man put in a man of the match display against Spurs and this had to be recognised.

"The result wouldn't have been possible without our goalkeeper," the Toon manager admitted.

"We found it a struggle in the first half but we were much better and brighter in the second half but Karl proved what a good goalkeeper he is.

"He's had to wait patiently for his chance with the form of Dubravka so I'm delighted for him. It's good for him."

A decent start to the season

Despite falling to an embarrassing defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, Bruce feels that four points from the opening three games represents a good start to the new campaign.

But after being somewhat fortunate to take a point in their latest match, the Newcastle manager has things to look at moving forwards.

"We need to improve on our performances," said Bruce.

"We've been great in the cup but our last two league performances need working on and we need to get better.

"I'm delighted with the attitude we've shown though."
