Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong has tested positive for coronavirus, the club have announced.

The Scotsman was on international duty when he received the results and will now self-isolate for the required period of 10 days. Arsenals Kieran Tierney and Celtic midfielder Ryan Christie are also self-isolating due to contact with Armstrong.

International woes

This is the second time Armstrong will be unavailable to the Saints following international fixtures having returned from the previous break with a quad injury forcing him to miss their losses to Brentford in the Carabao Cup followed by defeat to Crystal Palace. He returned to the side following those games and his return coincided with Saints back to back victories against Burnley & West Brom.

Unavailable

It remains to be seen if he will be unavailable when Saints visit Chelsea on the 17th October. His 10 days quarantine should finish on Friday the 16th; however, the effects of the virus and lack of training may well rule him out. Ralph Hassenhüttl will be glad that Saints now have more depth following the conclusion of the transfer window. Armstrong normally plays a floating role coming in from the right-hand side, and his injury may give a chance for the returning Theo Walcott to stake a claim for a run in the side.

Captain James Ward-Prowse is another option on the right now that Ibrahima Diallo has signed to challenge for a place in central midfield.
