Manchester United are on the road once again this weekend when Casey Stoney's side travel to East London to face West Ham United in the Women's Super League on Sunday.

The Reds currently sit fourth in the division, unbeaten this season and with three wins under their belt. Away to Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday, a Millie Turner goal was the only thing that separated the two.

Ahead of the West Ham tie, manager Stoney spoke to the press.

Injury situation

United have been unlucky this season with a number of players picking up injuries early on. Stoney confirmed that she does not yet have a full squad to select from but is hopeful that will improve after the international break.

"Jess [Sigsworth] is back in, obviously in the squad now. Jane [Ross]'s back, Lotte [Okvist]'s back, so we are getting better. Lauren James and Ona [Batlle] have been running this week so that's really positive, and obviously, Martha Harris is a longer-term one.

"But hopefully, after the international break, we'll be as near as we can get to a full squad."

A good start to the league

With ten points from their first four games, Stoney said that she was happy with the way which her side has performed so far this season, and they will look to keep up that form against a West Ham team who they lost to away from home last year:

"I think the important thing is that we've got points on the board. The opening game against Chelsea was never going to be easy - we knew that - and actually squad depth wise it was good to come away with a point and then obviously like we say, we've got nine points from thereon in.

"It's pleasing, but we know we've got lots to build on in terms of performances but sometimes, you know we've said to them, I thought it was a very gritty game on Saturday - lots of free-kicks, I don't think the referee helped with that one to be honest, but we've got to find a way to win and I think that was pleasing on Saturday.

"We know [that] West Ham away is tricky. We came unstuck last year and we've spoken about it this week. We know the lessons, we've got to make sure that doesn't happen again."

Spurs performance

Winning 1-0 at the Hive in last Sunday's game where Tobin Heath and Christen Press both made their first starts, Stoney thought that her side deserved the win in the end, despite not starting the game how she would have liked:

"I think the way we applied ourselves against Spurs was good. I think they came with a physical gameplan - when I've watched them in the previous three games and analysed them, it's clearly evident whenever we turn up that people's levels go up 20%.

"They changed, they went direct which they maybe hadn't done in other games, they tried to put it in behind our back-line and I think our back-line dealt with it really well. [The] first ten minutes I wasn't really happy with - even though we created a chance, we actually gave them chances from our sloppy play.

"After that, Mary [Earps] really didn't have a save to make, we threatened their goal again - not scoring - which is disappointing because I said it to them at the weekend - 'every time we don't put the chances away we keep the opposition in the game, we keep giving them hope' - but, I have to say we are getting in the right areas.

"There's new partnerships forming on the pitch as well, obviously players playing in slightly different positions at the weekend. But, I thought they responded really well, matched them, worked really hard, and I thought we deserved the win in the end, to be honest."

Player fatigue

United have a packed fixture list once again after the international break with a number of games against teams in the top half of the table coming in quick succession. With an injured squad, Stoney said that it will be something which her side has to deal with:

"It is what it is. We have to play the cards which we are dealt and yet again, we get another difficult run off the back of an international window where we go Everton, Arsenal, Man City and then Man City again four days later, but hopefully, by then we'll have everybody back fit and I'll be able to utilise my whole squad so I think we'll always pick a squad which we think can win the game, we've got a fantastic squad here now."

International callups

This weekend, Ella Toone and Millie Turner were called up to Phil Neville's England squad. Stoney said that she feels like a 'proud parent' to see them be picked for the senior Lionesses side:

"I'm a bit like a proud mum in a way! I see them every day and I see how hard they work -especially those two players - and how long they stay out on the grass after training and all the extra bits that they do that nobody else sees.

"Ella Toone last year would have been frustrated by how many minutes she got but she stuck with it and this year you look at the change and the difference in her performances. She is an intelligent young player.

"They are fantastic characters to have around the group as well. I am proud of them as people. It's not really about me being proud of myself, yes, we have developed them, absolutely, but it's because they want to be developed and they work so hard on their game. I'm not sitting here thinking I will take any credit for that because it's all on them but it's just a bit like being a proud parent."
