FT: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester United

Frankly, we should have expected this. The top-six games this season have been dire at best, and this one had its moments but it had 0-0 written all over it from the early stages.

United face a trip to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace this week, while Chelsea take on the champions Liverpool.

84' Lindelof cuts out the effort at the back-post

Werner is almost certain to score at the back-post, but Lindelof is on-hand to nick the ball away and prevent a late Chelsea goal.

77' Substitution for Manchester United

Anthony Martial replaces Mason Greenwood for the visitors.

76' Mendy fumbles, but United can't quite pounce

It's a great ball across the box from James, and Greenwood's pressure on the keeper sees Mendy fumble; Fernandes can't pounce to see it home, however.

68' Fred curls one past the top corner

Fred comes quite close, for one of his shots. He's not the most consistent from range, but the Brazilian bends one on his right foot that is only just high-and-wide of the top corner.

61' United have a flurry of shots

United put together a lovely attack: Shaw flashes the ball across the area, it's cleared to McTominay who smacks it low for Mendy to save, and Wan-Bissaka also comes close for the Reds.

Chelsea have enjoyed much of the ball but United have come closest in the last five minutes or so.

60' Greenwood comes close with a lovely effort

James and Greenwood interchange the play with a quick one-two, and Greenwood unleashes a wicked left-footed effort from outside the box that is just past the top corner.

He's unlucky, Greenwood, after not being involved in too much of the play, but that was a great effort.

52' James has a go, and wins United a corner

Rashford plays it over to James after a good run from the Welshman, though his eventual shot is blocked by the defence and out for a corner.

49' How have Chelsea not scored?

The ball drops straight to ZIyech after Chilwell's ball across the box, but De Gea does well to save despite going to wrong way. James has a direct effort on the rebound but it's nowhere near the goal.

46' We're back underway!

It's the hosts who kick us off, as Ziyech gets the two sides back underway.

HT: Change for Chelsea

Looks to be a half-time switch for the Blues, with Reece James on for Callum Hudson-Odoi at right-wing-back.

HT: Chelsea 0-0 Manchester United

It's not been the most entertaining of halves in terms of clear-cut chances, as the two sides go into the break goalless.

Manchester United could have had a penalty after a handball from Callum Hudson-Odoi, though the VAR check ruled it out.

We can only hope for goals in the second period.

44' United come close after Maguire knocks it long

Maguire switches the play excellently towards Fernandes, who heads it on to Rashford, but the attack fizzles out.
18:077 months ago

36' Chelsea come ever so close

A neat cross into the box from Hudson-Odoi is millimetres away from Giroud, who clashes with the goalpost.
18:047 months ago

32' Both sides struggling for chances

Neither side look able to mount a proper attack, with the Chelsea midfield dominating possession with the Reds doing well in defence. United can't quite break with efficiency, with the full-backs being pushed out to the flanks.
17:487 months ago

17' Could this have been a penalty?

This was the challenge - one set of fans will say it's obvious and the other will disagree, and it would be the same if roles were reversed.

A good job to VAR for letting the referee stick with the on-field decision.

17:477 months ago

16' No penalty - VAR decides not to award the infringement

It's tenuous at best, it looks to come off Hudson-Odoi's hand but the VAR officials do well to give the wing-back the benefit of the doubt in such an unnatural position.
17:457 months ago

14' Saved by Mendy

The free-kick for Rashford is a lovely effort, but it's straight at Mendy, who parries it for his defenders to clear. The hosts go up the other end, with Ziyech hitting one low down the throat of De Gea.

However, VAR are having a look at a potential handball from earlier on, as Hudson-Odoi may have got a hand on a loose ball in his own box, leading a check of a penalty.

12' Free-kick for United

Mount and McTominay collide, with the latter winning the ball to win the foul. United have done well in the last few moments to break with plenty of space behind Chelsea's high line, which is where Solskjaer wants the pace of Rashford and James to exploit.

9' Chelsea dominating in the early stages

Chelsea seem so up for this game, with United struggling to get a foot-hold. Chelsea looking to exploit the wings and find Olivier Giroud in the middle, but United have, so far, managed to cope with the threat of the in-form Frenchman.

United have a chance with Rashford, who beats Kante to win the loose ball,  but his cross into Greenwood is nicked by a Chelsea defender.

2' Giroud has an early opportunity for Chelsea

And immediately, the defensive vulnerabilities of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire are exposed. Chelsea counter-attack in numbers from an early United attack, and a cross into the box is headed away by Luke Shaw, with Giroud battling for it as well.

The subsequent corner-kick is dealt with well by United.

Reaction from the confirmed line-ups

Well, Chelsea line-up in a pretty expected fashion: Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell line up as wing-backs, with a strong midfield of N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic. Olivier Giroud leads the line and will cause the United centre-halves some issues today.

Manchester United, on the other hand, see Scott McTominay return to the side to continue his good partnership with Fred, while Daniel James is rewarded for his good form with another start.

Anthony Martial and Eric Bailly can't win themselves a starting place, and with that action, perhaps Solskjaer is sending a message that a striker is needed at Old Trafford this summer?

Solskjaer says win is crucial to the title race

With games against Chelsea and Manchester City on the horizon, Solskjaer stressed the importance of putting a run together if they still want to challenge for the Premier League title.

“We just have to focus and tick one game off at a time and, as you say, the three games are massive. We’ve got Chelsea just behind us, we’ve got City away in front of us and of course we can’t let them run further away if we have ambitions of catching them and we can’t give Chelsea too much hope of catching us either.

"Every game is important and from now until the international break will be a big period. We always say, let’s look at April/May and see how we are then, so let’s get to the international break and then we can focus on the run-in.”

Tuchel has faced United twice this season and is optimistic.

Tuchel spoke prior to the Premier League fixture and how he has already faced the Red Devils twice this season, as manager of PSG in the Champions League Group Stages.

He argued that he has a clue of how Manchester United could line-up on Sunday.

"It helps if you know the style, the strengths and weaknesses. We have a pretty good impression of the style they play and the spaces they want to hurt us, and their strengths individually and as a group. That helps to prepare.

"They like to have space, they like to counter-attack, they like to use their speed and absorb our speed. They are strong team that can defend very compact, very good in transition whoever plays, and it will be a big challenge to defend all this."

United looking to continue form

While Manchester United no longer look like the title challengers they did earlier in the season, they still have the chance to secure a second-placed finish. To do that, they must continue their strong form, and a win against Chelsea could be a statement to the rest of the top-four.
