The hosts had the advantage heading into the break courtesy of Matej Vydra, but a stunning strike from Jacob Murphy, and an even better goal from Saint-Maximin completed the comeback which now leaves Newcastle six points clear of the bottom three!

The half comes to a close and Burnley have the lead courtesy of a goal on 18-minutes from Matej Vydra.

Newcastle will feel they should have had a penalty when James Tarkowski cleared the ball in the Burnley box at head height, clattering Sean Longstaff in the process.

Previous meeting

The last time these two sides met was in October 2020, where Newcastle brushed Burnley aside in a 3-1 win at St James' Park.

A stunning solo run and finish from Allan Saint-Maximin gave Newcastle an early advantage in the first half, but a strike from Ashley Westwood pulled Burnley level on the hour mark.

However, a brace from Callum Wilson – one goal four minutes after Burnley equalised, then a penalty on 77 minutes – ensured the hosts grabbed all three points.

Steve Bruce looks ahead to Burnley

"We played very, very well last week. Well done to the players who came in and grasped the situation.

"Now, that's gone. We must now go and produce it against Burnley.

"We've got to be at those sort of levels to make sure we get something out of the match."

Sean Dyche on Steve Bruce and Newcastle

"There always seems to be a big expectation at Newcastle, but Steve is a very good manager in my opinion and a good bloke too.

"He is well-rounded in his views on football management and I don’t think there is such a thing as unfair in management anymore.

"Everyone is fair game and you take everything that comes your way. Society is changing in how people treat you, so we just have to roll with the punches.

"Steve gets a few knocks along the way and he can deal with that and he’ll stay focused on the job in hand.

"The bottom line is they are still a Premier League side and we have to be ready to perform.

"They are a good outfit with a very good manager so we have to be on top of our performance and the main focus is on us, I can assure you."

Callum Wilson has trained all week and will feature for Newcastle tomorrow after almost two months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark are also expected to return to The Toon side tomorrow after recovering from their respective injuries.

Andy Carroll was not involved against Tottenham last weekend, but has a 50/50 chance of making the trip to Lancashire tomorrow.

Jamaal Lascelles fractured his foot in that draw with Spurs last Sunday, and may not feature for the rest of the season.

Ryan Fraser, Isaac Hayden and Fabian Schar all remain ruled out for Newcastle.

Another cup final beckons for Newcastle

With 18th placed Fulham losing to both Aston Villa and Wolves since the last time Newcastle kicked a ball, Steve Bruce's men have a huge opportunity to give themselves some much-needed breathing space between them and their fiercest relegation rival tomorrow afternoon.

The Magpies head into this game against Burnley coming off a battling 2-2 draw with Tottenham – a result which will only breed confidence into a side that have only won two of their last 21 games.

Three points for Newcastle tomorrow will leave them six points clear of the relegation zone, with a game in-hand on Scott Parker's side below them.

Burnley looking to almost seal safety

Burnley definitely had more of an attacking presence in their eventual 3-2 defeat to Southampton – but the fact they threw away a two-goal lead on the south coast will have their supporters wondering whether their usual more defensive setup is the way to go.

The Clarets are seven points clear of the bottom three heading into this game at Turf Moor – and a win over Newcastle tomorrow should all but guarantee Premier League football next season for Sean Dyche's side.
