FINAL-TIME: Newcastle United 3-2 West Ham United

Well, not really a live commentary per such due to a multitude of reasons today. Had a power outage and then my internet took about half an hour to reconnect.

But well, I'm going to a recap of what happened instead.

After a good chance from Craig Dawson to put West Ham into an early lead, the centre-back got sent off for two yellow cards after the referee's intervention during Issa Diop's own goal.

Four minutes later, Newcastle were 2-0 up through Joelinton.

The second half was all West Ham though. Vladimir Coufal, Jarrod Bowen and Angelo Ogbonna all had good chances to get the Hammers' back into the game, but it took until the 73rd minute and an Issa Diop header for them to finally score.

And just seven minutes later, after a handball by Ciaran Clark, Jesse Lingard continued his goalscoring form by calmly putting the penalty into the back of the net.

Unfortunately for the Hammers' fans, Newcastle regained their lead just two minutes later through Joe Willock who converted in Matt Ritchie's cross.

West Ham tried re-equalizing but to no avail, as their "TOP 4" ambitions hit a stumbling block. They will now have to rely on Leicester City, Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC dropping points.

On the other hand, Newcastle have pretty much moved into safety. Nine points above the relegation zone with seven games to go, although Fulham's good form leaves all threatened teams in limbo.

Player to watch

After starting his West Ham career with eight goals and four assists in nine matches, Jesse Lingard looks to already be a key piece in David Moyes' puzzle.

Since joining the club in January, the loanee, primarily playing now as a right-winger, provided pace, creativity and the ability much needed for the Hammers to win games in which they most certainly weren't favourites, including last weeks' matchup against Leicester City.

And the Hammers are already looking to keep him for next season on a permanent deal.

Previous encounters

The head-to-head record looks fairly equal as in the last five meetings between the teams there were two Hammers' wins, two Magpies' wins and a draw.

In their latest meeting, Newcastle have comfortably dispatched their opponents' thanks to goals from Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick.

Current form

The hosts are coming into the game with just one loss, 3-0 away to Brighton and Hove Albion, in their latest six games as they are looking to climb up and away from the relegation zone to maintain their Premier League status.

The visitors, who are enjoying a very much unexpected TOP 4 push, have most recently beat Wolverhampton Wanderers, 3-2.
