FT: Southampton 3-1 Crystal Palace

It was Christian Benteke's goal within two minutes that set the ball rolling for a thoroughly enjoyable evening of Premier League football.

Southampton responded well to the early blow, with Danny Ings scoring on the turn to level the scoreline.

This was a Saints team that had arisen as dark horses to the European places race and, despite dropping like a stone in the second half of the season, they turned up tonight.

Blushes were spared before the close of the half after Forster saved a Milivojevic penalty.

Second-half goals from Ings and Che Adams wrapped up a comfortable victory at St Mary's.

90' Three minutes added on

Redmond just blazed a shot over the crossbar, the last action before the sideline board signals three minutes will be added onto the ninety.

86' Saints dominate

The home side are toying with their visitors now, playing the ball around as silky as you like.

They have had a brilliant second-half performance, assured and confident.

81' Almost 4-1

Ward does well to scramble the ball behind for a corner after Walker-Peters' cross was drilled across the face of the goalmouth.

There's a feeling here that Palace have given up their pursuit to salvage something in this game.

77' Third and final sub for Palace

Jean-Phillipe Mateta comes on, the visitor's goalscorer is replaced.

74' Goal for Ings again!

Playing with freedom has suited the Saints undeniably well tonight.

You can turn that 100 goal mark into 101 now...

A classy finish from Ings sees him make a fox in the box run to latch onto a delightful through ball, ending the passage of play with a toe-poke past the onrushing Guaita.

72' Second change for Palace

As Palace hunt for that elusive equaliser, Jordan Ayew makes way for Michy Batshuayi.

The Chelsea loanee has failed to build on his impressive first spell. However, he will hope to replicate his Everton cameo, whereby he scored a crucial goal for the Eagles.

Quarter of the game left

Palace have gained more of a foothold on this contest since the substitution, but I've just realised we haven't even mentioned Eze much tonight!

That may change with 20 minutes still to go.

21:37a month ago

64' Substitution for Palace

Jeffrey Schlupp comes on in place of Luka Milivojevic.

The Palace captain will be disappointed that he wasn't able to make amends for his penalty miss, but an attacking option comes on in his place to hopefully restore a fight in this game.

60' Close for Benteke

There's an ascending air of confidence around this Saints team in the second half. However, their hard work almost came undone.

Jannik Vestergaard miscontrolled a pass and presented Benteke with a glorious chance to get his second of the game.

The Palace number 20 failed to finesse his shot enough to trouble Fraser Forster, though.

53' Southampton sense all three points

Southampton have come out of the blocks racing in the early stages of this second half.

Nathan Redmond is seeing a lot of time and space to manoeuvre, without anything to show for his individual efforts yet.

A lot of space cropping up for both sides, but the Saints look more likely to get the next goal, following their second of the game.

47' Goal! Adams brings Saints' second goal

Another thing that Hodgson would have been wary of when setting up his team is the variety of Ward-Prowse's set-pieces.

The Englishman changed up his approach, striking a low cross into the danger zone.

Stuart Armstrong then proceeded to fluff a shot just wide, but Che Adams was quickest to react, squeezing a shot in from a tight angle.

The second half is live!

A straight swap sees the yellow-carded Bednarek come off in place of Salisu.

now we're back underway for the second half.

HT: Southampton 1-1 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace raced out of the blocks, scoring in just the second minute of the game, a repeat of their last Premier League outing.

However, the home side reacted well, and Danny Ings scored his 100th club career goal, turning a superb volley into gold.

The Saints cruised for most of the remaining passages of play thereafter, but after Redmond bundled Zaha over in the box, they rejoiced as Forster saved a Milivjevic spot-kick to keep the score level.

45' Close from Ward-Prowse!

A free-kick whips wide of the target from Ward-Prowse. At second glance, the shot wasn't as far away as first thought, but that didn't stop Guaita from being rooted to the spot.

The Palace goalkeeper will be glad that one didn't fly in...

43' Brilliant spectacle so far

Despite the two managers holding back comments on creative freedom, actions speak louder than words, and this game has proven just that.

Two goals and a penalty save? cannot ask for much more than that between two sides playing for nothing but pride.

20:57a month ago

40' Save! 1-1 it remains!

VAR check complete...

Luka Milivojevic never usually disappoints from the penalty spot, but the massive frame of Fraser Forster keeps this one out.

It remains 1-1...

39' Penalty!

Nathan Redmond protests his innocence, but it's quite clear that he has bundled Zaha over in the box.

The Ivorian was swarmed upon!

20:53a month ago

36' Corners continue to come into Guaita's box

Ward-Prowse is already showing his quality at setpieces again tonight, but unfortunately, they haven't led to anything just yet.

His crosses are always so inviting; surely Bednarek or Vestergaard will profit soon?

20:50a month ago

33' And breath...

Jordan Ayew is fouled inside his own half, presenting an opportunity for Palace to retain some confidence at last.

However, they get play back underway quickly. Eze chipped a ball over the Saints' defence, but the pass has too much purchase on it for the onrushing Jairo Riedewald to get his foot to it.

30' Palace have been henned back

I usually jinx a goal when I say things like this, but since their opener, Palace haven't got going again.

Ebere Eze just had a shot from a dead-ball situation, but apart from that, Southampton have been cruising.

20:41a month ago

25' Southampton close to getting a second

Absolutely superb play in-and-around the box ends with a Redmond shot that is parried behind for a corner.

The home side have responded so well to the early Benteke goal; they now sense a second.

Back with a bang...

19' Danny Ings! Goal for Southampton!

Nathan Redmond crosses in, and Danny Ings scores on the turn, a cracking volley.

It has been a good response from the home side, but there's still a long way to go in this match, and Palace have looked equally bright.

Deja Vu

20:28a month ago

12' A succession of corners for Southampton

Although nothing came of them, Palace won't be wanting to give too many dead-ball opportunities to the Saints tonight.

With James Ward-Prowse standing over the ball, anything can happen, but this time it was plain sailing for the Eagles.

20:24a month ago

7' Palace look really balanced early on

Hodgson's team is well set up to make use of space on the front foot, but they have shown an equal amount of concentration in getting men behind the ball when out of possession.

At times this season, Palace have looked imbalanced, whether that be in attack or defence. It will be interesting to see how their structure changes throughout the night.

20:20a month ago

2' Goal! Benteke!

Well, that was unintentional foreshadowing...

Christian Benteke has scored. After a positive start from Palace. The Belgian profited from Scott Dann's header that was placed across goal following a Milivojevic free-kick.

The striker had two bites as he chested the ball over the defender before smashing a ball through Forster's legs.

20:17a month ago

1' First chance for Palace

Christian Benteke opened the scoring inside the first minute at Bramall Lane at the weekend, and the Belgian looked to repeat that feat here.

The striker lashed a shot just wide from 25 yards out, but it wasn't enough to trouble the Southampton goalkeeper.

Kick-off

And it's live!

It's the earliest all three relegated teams have been confirmed, but there's still a lot of points up for grabs for these two teams.

Crystal Palace, who choose to use their white away shirt for tonight, get us underway.

20:09a month ago

Both managers are coming across as very cagey in their press conferences before kick-off.

Ralph Hassenhuttl and Roy Hodgson have expressed their feeling of competitiveness ahead of tonight's game.

Neither head coach implied that they can play with a bit more freedom.

Still, their performances may tell a different story. Five minutes to go here.

Underway in just under 30 minutes at St Mary's

Fulham's relegation confirmation may have taken the jeopardy away from Southampton's game tonight, but both these clubs have a lot to prove for next season.

By no means has it been a successful campaign for Palace, who have failed to show they're any closer to being self-sufficient without their talisman Wilf Zaha.

On the other side of the coin, Southampton showed so much promise in the first half of the season. An explosive start left them on top of the table at one point, but injuries have cost them dearly.

Eberechi Eze starts again... Of course!

After reporting on Palace's last game, where they proved too hot to handle for Sheffield United, it was a pleasure to watch Eze.

He drifts effortlessly past opposition players, often leaving them to wallow in the dirt of his path.

Roy Hodgson spoke very fondly of his English acquisition at the weekend, suggesting that his ceiling is very high. The former England boss tips him to become a mainstay in the England squad in the future.

Let's see how he performs tonight.

Mathematical safety has been reached for both clubs before tonight's clash

After the weekend saw results go in favour of both clubs that face each other tonight, they now know where their future lies. As both Fulham and West Bromwich Albion dropped points, mathematical safety was confirmed for Crystal Palace and Southampton. Fear not, though, because tonight should still be a cracker, with both teams now able to play with the shackles off.
