Goals and Highlights: Burton Albion 0-2 Newcastle United in Pre-Season Friendly Match 2021

It's all over here at the Pirelli Stadium and Newcastle United have recorded their second win of pre-season, defeating League One side Burton Albion by two goals to nil.

Jacob Murphy's near-post strike on eight minutes gave Steve Bruce's side the lead, before Joelinton's bullet header doubled The Magpies' lead just a minute into the second half.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's men start their league campaign next weekend against Shrewsbury, while Newcastle face fellow Premier League team Norwich City in their final friendly at St James' Park next Saturday.

Guess what? There's been more substitutes!

Former Manchester United man Cameron Borthwick-Jackson is on for Burton in place of John Brayford.

Newcastle make another two changes, taking their tally up to ten substitutes tonight, with Tom Allan and Jack Young replacing Isaac Hayden and Jacob Murphy.

As you can imagine, the constant changes from both sides are really hindering the flow of the game!

Federico Fernandez is replaced by Kell Watts as Newcastle make their eighth substitute of the game.

The hosts make another two changes as Joe Powell and Thomas O'Connor are replaced by Omari Patrick and Bryn Morris.

Matty Longstaff is also on for Matt Ritchie, as part of another Newcastle change.

White's volley from well outside of the penalty area looks as if it's heading into the back of the net, but Garratt makes a top save to deny the youngster's effort!

Newcastle bring on another three players, this time it's all defenders as Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark and Jamal Lewis are on for Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth and Sean Longstaff.

Burton bring on two substitutes of their own – 'Trialist A' and Conor Shaughnessy replace Michael Mancienne and Jacob Maddox.

Almost as soon as he enters the game, Gayle is put through on goal, but he cannot steer his effort onto target!

Newcastle make two changes – Joelinton and Ryan Fraser are replaced by Joe White and Dwight Gayle.

Oshilaja goes into the book for the hosts after a heavy challenge on Fraser.

Newcastle double their advantage against Burton immediately after the restart, and it's Joelinton with the goal!

His bullet header from a pinpoint Fraser corner delivery beats Garratt at all ends up!

Burton get us underway in the second half.

Newcastle make one change at the break – Mark Gillespie replaces Freddie Woodman in goal.

We've reached the interval at the Pirelli Stadium and Newcastle lead by a goal to nil thanks to a strike in the eighth minute from Jacob Murphy.

Two minutes added on at the end of the first half.

Fernandez's header from a corner is collected comfortably by goalkeeper Garratt.

An early change for The Brewers sees Joe Powell replace Kane Hemmings who has picked up an injury.

Hamer has an effort go wide of the goal for Burton from 20-yards out – their first real opportunity of the game.

Fraser breaks down the wing and finds Joelinton – who's had a bright game so far – in space but his shot is tame.

Schar has just went on one of his typical surging runs from defence and cracked a shot from distance, but his effort was nowhere near from testing the Burton goalkeeper.

Newcastle thought they had doubled their lead when Longstaff turned the ball into the back of the net after some more slick play from The Magpies, but the referee flagged Fraser for offside during the build-up.

It didn't take the Premier League side long to break the deadlock – Newcastle are in front courtesy of Jacob Murphy!

Some great work from Joelinton down the left-hand side sees the Brazilian cut the ball to back post, it then takes a deflection on the way through and finds its way to Murphy who finds the back of the net!

Hayden finds space to shoot for Newcastle but his effort sails over the crossbar.

We are officially underway here in Burton!

The two sides enter the pitch at the Pirelli Stadium and kick-off is now imminent.

We're hearing that kick-off has been delayed by five minutes.

This is due to a large number of supporters still queuing outside to get into the stadium.

- Burton were beaten home and away by Newcastle the last time the two teams were in the same league as each other. (2016/17 Championship)

Pre-season games are always notoriously difficult to predict, and I'm sure this game won't be any different!

Burton have shown the quality they possess with their penalties victory over Leicester, whereas Newcastle have somewhat been lacklustre in their opening three friendlies.

But, The Magpies do play two divisions above their opponents!

The best bet, I feel, is to go with a draw for this one.

Prediction: Burton Albion 1-1 Newcastle United

The last time these two sides met was in the Sky Bet Championship in April 2017, where Newcastle edged Burton out in a 1-0 victory.

The game to this day still lives long in the memory of Toon supporters, as it was the match where Matt Ritchie scored a penalty before referee Keith Stroud overturned the spot-kick and gave the opposition a free-kick.

Ritchie did end up scoring the winner that day, despite his penalty controversially being chalked off.

Newcastle's top goalscorer last season and new number nine Callum Wilson is undoubtedly the one-to-watch for Steve Bruce's men tomorrow night.

Wilson, who signed for a £20 million fee from Bournemouth last season, scored 12 goals and assisted five in 26 appearances for The Magpies in his first year on Tyneside.

The key player to watch from a Burton perspective is winger Lucas Akins, a man who has been at the club for over seven years, netting over 80 goals in the process.

Akins' has started all of The Brewers' pre-season games so far – and is set to once again feature heavily tomorrow evening.

Newcastle's players were booed off the pitch at the New York Stadium on Tuesday night after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Rotherham on Tuesday – and will be keen to respond against Burton with a win tomorrow night.

The Magpies have only won one of their opening three pre-season games so far, with that victory coming against Doncaster Rovers last week.

This game tomorrow for Burton against Premier League opposition will be The Brewers' final preparation game before their season opener away to Shrewsbury next Saturday.

This won't be the first top flight side Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's men have faced during pre-season, they defeated Leicester City at the weekend, and will be looking to condemn Newcastle to a similar fate.
