Tahith Chong made his professional debut for Birmingham City on Saturday as the Blues beat Sheffield United 1-0.

The Manchester United loanee signed for Birmingham on a season-long loan last month and has started on a high.

The winger was named the man of the match and is quickly becoming a fan-favourite amongst Blues fans.

Chong played just 45 minutes in United's pre-season but still managed to make an impression with a goal against Derby County before being loaned out.

Proving critics wrong

Chong has already shut down any detractors that said he physically would not be able to compete in the Championship after spending two recent loan periods in the Bundesliga and the Pro League in Belgium.

It was his defensive qualities that caught the eye last night as he won seven tackles - which was five more than any other player.

He also played in a wonderful cross which was headed into the back of the net but was ruled out for a foul in the buildup.

Unfamiliar role for Chong

Chong also played in a slightly different position for Birmingham. As opposed to playing out wide, he enjoyed more of a free role in the midfield.

The United youngster managed to bomb forward but also track back and win possession. His three shots were off target but he showed great confidence on the opening day of the season.

The only disappointing part of Chong's evening came in the 73rd minute when he was substituted due to injury.

United and Chong will be hoping it is a minor issue for the Dutch international and desperately want this loan spell to be much more practical than his previous two.
