FULL TIME: Newcastle 2 - 4 West Ham

West Ham come from behind at half-time to beat Newcastle at St James' Park.

A superb second-half performance from the Hammers gets them off to a winning start, while the hosts will be disappointed to lose after leading the game twice.

Allan Saint-Maximin was electric, but Benrahma and Antonio proved too much for Newcastle over 90 minutes. Boos rang out around the stadium at full-time, and the Toon will be hoping for much-needed additions before the close of the transfer window.

Declan Rice has really imposed himself on this second half. The England international makes another interception to drive his team forwards, and Newcastle make a last-ditch clearance to prevent Antonio from grabbing another.

The Magpies then counter and Ryan Fraser curls his effort just wide of the far post. 4-2 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The goals just keep on coming!

An incisive counter-attack from the Hammers is led by Benhrahma as he drives at the Newcastle defence.

The Algerian delays his pass before feeding through Michail Antonio and the forward does the rest. West Ham's number 9 takes one touch before firing into the far corner to extend his side's lead.

Newcastle lead at the break

14:49a month ago

HALF-TIME: Newcastle 2-1 West Ham

A very eventful first-half.

Newcastle lead at the break thanks to headers from Wilson and Murphy. Both sides look dangerous on the break, and we could well be in for more goals in the second-half.

It's been a very entertaining start to this one.

Both sides look dangerous every time they go forwards, ASM and Bowen both making things happen for their teams. Newcastle almost retake the lead, but Almiron's deflected strike from the edge of the area is denied by the crossbar.

14:26a month ago

23' - GREAT SAVE!

A delightful run from Jarrod Bowen!

The winger beats two defenders with ease as he cuts in from the right, but is unable to beat Woodman as he reaches the area. Great stop from the 'keeper to keep the scores level.

14:23a month ago

18' - GOAL. 1-1.

18' - GOAL. 1-1. CRESSWELL.

West Ham have an equaliser!

Good patient play from the Hammers as they work their opening. The ball eventually finds Aaron Cresswell on the left, and his effort across goal evades everybody inside the box before creeping in at the far post. VAR checked to see if Jarrod Bowen scored from an offside position but the ball was already over the line by the time the winger touched it.

Benrahma drives at Shelvey down the left and beats his man with skill. The winger is unable to find a teammate with his cross, but promising signs from the Algerian.

The visitors are enjoying the majority of the possession, but its the hosts who look the most dangerous on the counter-attack.

4' - GOAL. 1-0 NEWCASTLE. WILSON.

1-0.

It's that man Callum Wilson who opens the scoring! Fantastic work from Saint-Maximin down the right, and he beats Declan Rice before finding Newcastle's number 9 with a pinpoint cross.

Wilson makes no mistake with his header from close range, and the hosts lead.

14:05a month ago

2' - CHANCE.

West Ham go very close to grabbing an early goal.

Aaron Cresswell's wicked corner delivery tests the Newcastle defence, and Tomas Soucek's header is only denied by Miguel Almiron's goalline clearance. Good start from the Hammers!

Team News Reaction

No new signings on show this afternoon, as expected, following an uneventful summer transfer window for both clubs. Newcastle fans have been disappointed at the lack of investment under Mike Ashley's ownership, while West Ham supporters expected more additions following Europa League qualification.

Allan Saint-Maximin's inclusion is a big boost for the hosts, while Freddie Woodman makes his Premier League debut, in goal. West Ham's lineup is the strongest available to David Moyes.

Big season ahead for Benrahma

Following an impressive pre-season, the expectation among many West Ham supporters is that Saïd Benrahma will be a vital player for the club in the 2021/22 campaign.

The Algerian wizard notched 6 league assists last season, but only managed the 1 goal, a sublime curled effort away at Brighton. David Moyes will be hoping the talented playmaker can take a step up, especially in the absence of Jesse Lingard who returned to Manchester United after his loan spell.

West Ham's Callum Wilson Curse

There are certain players who seem to get on the scoresheet every time they face the Hammers. Romelu Lukaku's return to the Premier League is bad news for West Ham, while the East Londoners will have been relieved by the retirement of Glenn Murray.

They face another of their arch-enemies today in the form of Callum Wilson. The Magpies' talisman has scored more Premier League goals against West Ham than any other team - an impressive total of 8. He is set to lead the line today, and will be a threat that the Claret and Blue backline must handle.

Repeat of last season's opener

Newcastle beat West Ham 2-0 at the London Stadium as both sides got their respective campaigns underway at the start of last season.

Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick got the goals on that occasion, and the Toon will be aiming to repeat that scoreline today.

12:35a month ago

Opening Day Form

Both of these two sides have a very poor opening day record, but will be hoping to rectify that today!

The Magpies have the worst record of any Premier League team, winning two and drawing two of their last 10 matches to start the season.

The Hammers have not been much better, losing seven of their last 10 opening day fixtures, including last season's defeat to Newcastle...
