As it happened - Jota and Mané goals give Liverpool win over Burnley

FULL TIME. Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

FULL TIME. That does it from me today.

Liverpool were good money for their win in the end, Jota's first half header was sublime, getting ahead of Mee.

Then Mané's thunderous volley from inside the area killed the game off, but it had been coming since the first half.

Burnley created some chances of their own, Dwight McNeil once again their best player today but, besides him rattling the post before the opening goal, they didn't look like a serious threat.

They need reinforcements, that is a given, the substitutions made were not going to affect the game in anyway.

Liverpool looked solid and comfortable throughout, but they did have a couple of shaky moments in defence, yet they will be ironed out as match fitness comes back into the legs.

The Reds sit at the top of the Premier League ahead of the 3pm kick-offs this afternoon, Burnley without a point and in need of signings.

Thank you for joining me this afternoon, it was a thoroughly entertaining, end-to-end game that had the right winner in the end.

Enjoy the rest of your Saturday, I am sure I will see you again soon.

Stay Safe!

FULL TIME. Liverpool 2-0 Burnley - Mané's Goal

14:27a month ago

FULL TIME.Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

FULL TIME. There's the final whistle!

Diogo Jota and Sadio Mané with the goals either side of half time give Liverpool all three points.

Burnley were very much in the game in the first half, Dwight McNeil hitting the post.

Mo Salah had a number of opportunities including his disallowed goal in the first period.

Liverpool had a number of chances in the second half as well, Mané and Salah forcing Pope into a number of good saves.

The result temporarily sends Liverpool top of the League, but it is worrying for The Clarets, who's unbeaten Anfield run comes to an end.

Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

90+5. Alisson makes a smart save from Barnes before Cork thrashes it wide.

It was a great save and that will just about do it.

Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

81. You can sense the Burnley fans that have seen Pieters come on at left midfield will not be very happy.

They have the bare minimum in terms of wide players meaning a left back has to play out of position and Dwight McNeil has to play every minute.

Something is not right behind the scenes in the boardroom, it seems.

Liverpool 2-0 Burnley

81. Liverpool substitutions too.

Thiago is coming on for Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino replaces Diogo Jota.

Liverpool 1-0 Burnley

64. Liverpool win a corner again.

In the build up there, Cork barrels through the back of Jota and is probably lucky not to concede a penalty there.

Mané has a tame header easily caught by Pope.

Salah chests it down and sits Taylor down and then stabs it goalwards but McNeil is there to block it.

Mané is free on the edge of the box and he fires a volley but Taylor flies out to block it.

50. An issue here for Tarkowski.

He headed the ball ahead of Mane and Jota and smashed his head into the back of Mané's head.

It looks painful, right in his eye socket.

HALF TIME. Liverpool 1-0 Burnley - THE GOAL

13:22a month ago

HALF TIME. Liverpool 1-0 Burnley

HALF TIME. The Reds are comfortable after the header from Jota and could have been further ahead.

Salah's disallowed goal, Mané's missed volley and a fresh air strike from Elliott could have put this game out of sight.

Burnley are more than just in this game, McNeil hit the post before the goal, and has tested Alisson again, as has Wood.

It's going to be a good second half at Anfield, see you after the interval!

It was a good challenge and it bobbles wide.

Liverpool 1-0 Burnley

39. End to end stuff here.

McNeil gets by Alexander-Arnold, nutmegs Matip with his cross and finds Barnes inside the area but he can't pass it off for Wood.

Liverpool go up the other end and Henderson's cross was cleared only as far as Keita but his volley is high and wild.

Liverpool 1-0 Burnley

27. Nevermind.

It was a brilliant move from Liverpool and it was sensational from Elliott.

He picked it up with his back to goal, slipped it through for Salah who curls it home in trademark fashion.

He is less than half a yard offside, but still definitively enough and the goal is chalked off.

Still 1-0.

A rare 1-11 for the Clarets

I am sure you have seen, Burnley will have the first 1-to-11 starting line-up since Charlton did it in 1998-99.

You won't see many teams achieving that these days!

What a statistic!

My prediction - a tough afternoon for the visitors

Despite an exceptional record in recent seasons here, Burnley are going to be in for a long afternoon.

A packed, raucous crowd will be a huge factor for the hosts along with a near full strength squad.

The Clarets will make it hard at times, that is almost a given but the Reds talent will shine through.

Once they get going, they will be pretty difficult to stop and it could turn into a mauling today.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-0 Burnley

Barnes and Brownhill in for Clarets

Two changes for Burnley from last weekend's defeat at home to Brighton.

Josh Brownhill replaces Ashley Westwood in midfield - who misses out altogether.

Ashley Barnes is also recalled to the starting 11 ahead of Jay Rodriguez, after last season's penalty winner at Anfield.

Liverpool bring in Elliott for injured Milner

Youngster Harvey Elliott is in the starting 11, replacing James Milner who misses out with a slight knock.

Jordan Henderson also starts, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn't even make the bench.

Andy Robertson is in the squad, but Kostas Tsimikas keeps his place at left back for now.

Sean Dyche says...

“You don’t succeed anywhere in life, in my opinion, but you certainly don’t in football, and you certainly don’t at Anfield against a top-class side, unless you’re prepared to put a shift in.

“I think that’s a given from us, but it is required.

“It’s also the tactical understanding of the performance, getting your distances right and then dealing with the ball and using the ball when you can.

“It’s a tough ask. It’s always a tough ask. Anywhere in the Premier League is tough.

“But, of course, even if you just look statistically at these teams, it’s very tough going to these places and winning games.

“But we’ve done it before, and we will have to earn the right and try and do it again.”

Team News - Burnley

The visitors could be unchanged after their opening day defeat.

Josh Brownhill could be pushing for a start in the centre of the park, which could result in a change in formation.

Sean Dyche could go to a five in midfield, meaning Jay Rodriguez could drop to the bench.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson played well last weekend so would keep his place in the side, but the lack of wide options at the club means he would play anyway.

Dale Stephens and Kevin Long remain absent.

Team News - Liverpool

Andy Robertson is still missing for the hosts, who will hand a second consecutive start to Kostas Tsimikas at left back.

Curtis Jones could feature in some capacity, as could Thiago and Jordan Henderson who both came back to the club after their European Championship exploits.

The attacking dilemma returns, but it is a good problem to have as Jurgen Klopp will have to choose three from the four of Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino, who replaced the Portuguese international and scored at Carrow Road last weekend.

Summer signing Ibrahima Konate could also make his first competitive appearance for the club.

Premier League highs and lows experienced last weekend

The first weekend of the Premier League season provided us with plenty of highlights.

Liverpool’s dominating performance at Norwich City was capped off with a stunning goal by Mo Salah, as The Reds look to form a title challenge after last season’s stuttering defence.

Burnley, on the other hand, did not enjoy their first game despite being the better team for most of it.

The early goal by James Tarkowski followed by a host of wasted chances allowed Brighton and Hove Albion back into the game, stunning Clarets fans with a six minute turnaround in the final 20 minutes to take all three points.

No incomings this week for either side probably isn’t what either manager would have liked, though.
