Arteta overcomplicating things?

Martin Keown thinks the manager might be overcomplicating the tactics. He might be right. Trying to replicate the Man City way at the Emirates was never going to be easy.

There are big problems when you try to effortlessly play through the line with the personnel that Arsenal have. Chambers, Holding and Kolasinac are not top-six standard defenders. Leno has regressed.

In attack, Arsenal have exciting players but it's too top-heavy. There is no balance in this team whatsoever.

Full-time:Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal

Contrasting emotions!

Delight for City. They have failed with their efforts to bring in Kane and Ronaldo, but the performance of Torres will have delighted his manager. The Spain international is a winger, first and foremost, but he has the potential to thrive as a false-nine in this team.

Arsenal, by contrast, are in a huge rut. There isn't much to add on that. Very little room for nuance. It's really, really bleak for fans of the Londoners.

SAVE! Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal

90+2: Gundogan picks out Cancelo with a brilliant lobbed pass and the full-back finds himself one-on-one with Leno. He should score but the keeper makes a great save. Leno has prevented a cricket score this afternoon!
14:2123 days ago

SAVE!Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal

90+1: In the first of three added minutes, Mahrez chopped in on his left foot but his strike was saved by Leno. Tierney took a lot of sting out of the shot with a good block.
14:2023 days ago

CLOSE! Manchester City 5-0 Arsenal

90: Torres bends an inviting ball to the back post and it almost creeps in. Very nearly an inadvertent hat-trick for Torres!

14:1523 days ago

GOAL! TORRES!!!

84: Mahrez skips past a wilting Tierney and plays an inviting cross between Chambers and Holding. Torres' movement is good and he directs a header across Leno and into the net via the post. City hit five!

Late one on Jack Grealish!

Manchester City 4-0 Arsenal

79: Tierney is down and he's holding his ankle. Hopefully nothing too serious. Arsenal have made all of their changes and they're down to ten men.

77: Sterling is played through on goal, in behind Kolasinac, but Leno stands tall and makes the save.

SAVE! Manchester City 4-0 Arsenal

68: Gorgeous ball from Mahrez to the back-post for Sterling, whose header forces Leno to tip the ball over the top. Great link-up between the subs!

Manchester City 4-0 Arsenal

65: Sterling dribbles away from Chambers but he can't quite cut the ball back to any team-mates, with his attempted delivery blocked.

61: Kolasinac is down holding his foot. Meanwhile, Guardiola makes his final change: Mahrez for Jesus.

59: Lacazette for Aubameyang. The Gabonese star has barely had a kick.

SUBSTITUTION! Manchester City 4-0 Arsenal

57: Are City going to rest on their laurels? Erm, no! Sterling is coming on for Bernardo.
13:4523 days ago

Manchester City 4-0 Arsenal

54: Awful positional awareness from Cedric on the Rodri goal. Almost a carbon-copy of the first Chelsea goal last weekend. Defence holding a line and Cedric is two-yards deeper, playing everybody onside.
13:4323 days ago

GOAL! RODRI!!!

53: Super strike from Rodri! Torres does well to hold the ball up before rolling the ball back for the Spaniard. It's a beautifully nonchalant hit from Rodri, who bends the ball around Elneny and into the far corner from 25-yards.
13:4023 days ago

SAVE! Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal

50: Bernardo bundles his way through two challenges, after good work from Grealish, and he forces Leno into a smart reaction save. The ball then breaks to Rodri and his fierce shot is blocked.
13:3623 days ago

Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal

47: Cancelo whips a wonderful cross in with the outside of his boot but neither Jesus nor Grealish can get a telling touch. Second-half starting how the first-half ended.
13:3523 days ago

SUBSTITUTIONS! Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal

46: Zinchenko on for Walker. Arsenal have brought Elneny on for Saka.

Half-Time: Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal

Easy street for City. Exactly what they needed after a frustrating week in the transfer market. Grealish, Torres, Bernardo, Jesus and Gundogan are all competent goalscorers and Arsenal have no answer to all of them.

No Ronaldo? No problem!

Arsenal were always going to be up against this but this is as bad as it could get. They will do well to keep the score below five at this point!

13:1523 days ago

Manchester City 3-0 Arsenal

45: Backs-to-the-wall for Arsenal. The red card has made it mission impossible, if it wasn't already!
13:1423 days ago

GOAL! JESUS!!!

43: Great football by City. Grealish has been quiet but he comes into his own here. He storms past Chambers before prodding the ball across for Jesus. The Brazilian takes a touch to steady himself before sliding it into the net.
13:1223 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

41: Jesus shifts inside and isn't far away from a dinked ball into the box. Men against boys for a second week in a row, for the Gunners!
13:1123 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

40: Ten men behind the ball for Arsenal. City strolling.
13:0923 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

38: A tough prospect for Arsenal has got even tougher. Penny for Arteta's thoughts!
13:0723 days ago

RED CARD! Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

35: Disaster for Arsenal! Xhaka has gone in two-footed on Cancelo and he has been giving a red card. Xhaka doesn't actually connect with Cancelo but the intent alone is enough to present him with his marching orders.
13:0523 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

34: Quieter period of the game. City controlling possession. Cancelo turned Chambers nicely but his cross-shot was into the side-netting.
12:5923 days ago

YELLOW! Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

28: Kolasinac booked for an arm on Jesus. A bit harsh.
12:5723 days ago

OFFSIDE! Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

27: Xhaka thinks he's broken past the City defence but he's marginally offside. His shot was saved by Ederson anyway.
12:5623 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

25: The Arsenal back-three are hideously organised. All over the place! They are playing high calibre opposition but it just doesn't look well thought out at all.
12:5523 days ago

YELLOW! Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

24: Cedric gets a silly booking for a foul on Grealish.
12:5423 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

23: Grealish has been virtually anonymous in this one so far. Most of City's attacks have been on the right, with Bernardo and Jesus receiving a lot of the ball.

Grealish did, however, just pull down Saka. Perhaps a little bit of frustration from the England international.

12:5323 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

22: 67% of the ball for the hosts. They're now in total control of this, unless Ederson wants to level the playing field again!
12:5123 days ago

PHEW! Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

20: Ederson is daydreaming and Smith-Rowe closes him down. The keeper tries to play a casual pass out and the ball hits Smith-Rowe before shifting agonisingly across the goal and wide. Lucky!
12:4823 days ago

CHANCE! Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

17: Jesus is loving life on the left. He finds Torres with a low-drilled cross but the Spaniard doesn't properly connect from 12-yards. If he does, he will have fancied another goal for himself. Arsenal's defence is all at sea.
12:4623 days ago

Ominous!

12:4523 days ago

Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

14: The goal was subject to a VAR check as Chambers felt that he was fouled. Nothing much in it and the goal stands. Arsenal started well and now they're 2-0 down!
12:4323 days ago

GOAL! TORRES!!!

12: Wow! Astonishingly poor defending from Arsenal. Bernardo's flat cross takes a small deflection off Cedric and evades a sea of Arsenal bodies. Torres ghosts in at the back-post to divert the ball into the net. Shocking defending!
12:4223 days ago

SAVE! Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

10: Gundogan's late-man running causes panic again and the German gets a firm contact on a crossed in ball, only to be denied by a fine Leno save.
12:4023 days ago

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

9: How very disappointing for Arteta. His team had dominated the opening few minutes and now it's back to square one. A really basic goal to concede.
12:3923 days ago

GOAL! GUNDOGAN!!!!

8: Just like that, City have the lead. Bernardo and Jesus hold the ball in the corner well, the latter lofts a ball up to the back post. Chambers is caught out and Gundogan sneaks in to plant a header past a helpless Leno from point-blank range.
12:3623 days ago

CHANCE! Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal

5: Arsenal putting together some good possession. They find Tierney in acres of space and the Scot pick out Saka with a brilliant cross. Cancelo does just enough to put the winger off.
12:3423 days ago

Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal

3: Positive start by Arsenal. Tierney definitely the left-wing-back with Kolasinac in the back-three. Good intensity from the Gunners so far, trying hard to get the ball forward.
12:3123 days ago

Manchester City 0-0 Arsenal

1: And we're underway! Martin Atkinson is the referee.

Gabriel Jesus: Left-forward?

Gabriel Jesus has reportedly told his manager that he sees himself as a wide-man. The Brazilian was expected to be the heir to Aguero but he now prefers the winger position. His off-the-ball work is excellent, as is his link-up play, which probably explains his preference to play off the main forward.
12:1123 days ago

Jack Grealish: Big-game man?

Jack Grealish will always be in the headlines after his £100-million transfer. Such a fee demands that the player stands up and makes himself counted.

The former Aston Villa man looks set to start as a number-eight again, but he could also play as a false-nine or a left-forward. Clearly, Guardiola anticipates he can evolve his off-the-ball work in a similar way to Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva.

Pep Guardiola breaking more records!

12:0223 days ago

No Raheem Sterling

For the second game in a row, Raheem Sterling will be watching the action from the substitutes bench.

The winger had a sensation Euro 2020 tournament with England but he came into that on the back of a turbulent period with City. Sterling has been a virtual ever-present for Pep Guardiola, before losing his place to Phil Foden

Foden is currently out with injury, however, Guardiola now prefers Gabriel Jesus as the left-forward.

Sterling is on the peripheries at the moment.

11:5823 days ago

No Lokonga

Albert-Mboyo Sambi Lokonga has started the season steadily alongside Granit Xhaka, but now he has dropped to the bench.

The double-pivot partnership had been showing small signs of promise and, therefore, it's odd to see Martin Odegaard drop into a deeper role. The Norwegian star prefers to be in advanced positions on the field.

No Ronaldo, no problem?

People forget that City won the league without the services of Sergio Aguero for the majority of that time.

They played with a false-nine and the unpredictability of their goal-getter actually played into their hands. Opponents didn't know who to man-mark.

Prediction

City are in another league to their opponents. Ronaldo, or not, Guardiola will be ensuring that his men are pushing for a second consecutive league title. They have the same title winning squad, plus Grealish. That should be too much for this Arsenal team to live with.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-0 Arsenal

Mikel Arteta on new deals

“We don’t know. We have already done a lot of things. Ins and outs, it’s a lot.

"I can leave in two months if the results aren't good or the organisation isn't happy with me. I can leave in three months or five years.

"What I said is after my period at City I will take a break. It can be in one month, two years, five years. Right now I don't have reasons to leave."

Key Player: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Arsenal)

The Gabonese star has never truly found his best form since signing that eye-watering new Arsenal contract at the start of last season. However, Aubameyang did net a hat-trick in his team’s 6-0 Carabao Cup victory over West Bromwich Albion.

£100-million man!

Key Player: Jack Grealish (Manchester City)

The £100-million man has made a solid start to this time at Man City. He showed glimpses of his potential on his debut against Tottenham before getting off the mark in the 5-0 victory over Norwich City. This is a good opportunity to make a statement against one of the traditional members of the big-six.

Arsenal: Mikel Arteta needs calm

Arsenal are desperate to stay relevant. They are a big-six club but they are a long way from showing that on the field.

Mikel Arteta has beaten Pep Guardiola once, 2-0 in an FA Cup semi-final clash, but the apprentice looks unlikely to add to that victory this weekend. Arteta inherited a mess and now the club has come full circle again.

In truth, their season starts after the international break. This one is a free-hit.

Manchester City: Cristiano Ronaldo blow

It has been a tough week for City fans.

After Harry Kane confirmed that he is staying at Tottenham Hotspur, it looked as though the club were set to seal a deal for the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, talks with Ronaldo broke down as the 36-year-old flew to England. His former club Manchester United  are now in pole position to seal a quite astonishing deal.

Ronaldo could now sensationally return to Old Trafford after leaving to join Real Madrid in 2009.
