Thanks for tuning in...

This is Ryan signing off from VAVEL; Manchester United have a lot of questions to answer after this evening's result. Liverpool were magnificent but they didn't need to really push as United's defending was all over the place.

The result and performance has been coming for weeks, and now an inquest must begin at Old Trafford.

FT: Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool

It's a huge victory for Liverpool, who were never under the cosh today and were firmly in control. Mohamed Salah's hat-trick cemented himself as arguably the world's best on current form.

For Manchester United, however, it's an atrocious display that has summarised much of the last few weeks succinctly.

With that defeat, an inquest into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's tenure may have to begin.

90' Three minutes added on

Three minutes of extras here - and United will be questioning why it's taking so long for Anthony Taylor to put them out of their misery.
17:16a month ago

82' United hit the crossbar

Scott McTominay wins the header after a free-kick into the box, and Edinson Cavani's finish cannons off the crossbar.

United can't catch a break today - but they'd be undeserving of such.

17:02a month ago

71' Alexander-Arnold comes close!

Trent Alexander-Arnold has a good effort from distance that would have won any award - but it's a super save from David de Gea to deny the right-back.
16:54a month ago

62' Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on for Liverpool

Naby Keita has to be stretchered off after that challenge, it could be a bad one for the midfielder.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on, and Cavani and Diogo Dalot are the final changes for the Red Devils.

60' Red card - VAR sends Pogba back to the dressing room

VAR has a look at Pogba's challenge and the jump into the tackle sees Pogba walk back to the dressing room with a grimace on his face.
16:50a month ago

57' Cavani waiting in the wings

There isn't much to say about this United side right now, Liverpool haven't even needed to get into third gear today.

Edinson Cavani will be making his return to the side with a substitute appearance imminently - but it doesn't look like he'll be able to do much.

Paul Pogba is booked for a late challenge on Naby Keita - but VAR could well overturn this and send Pogba for an early bath.

16:45a month ago

52' Ronaldo has the ball in the net, but VAR says otherwise...

It was a great finish from Cristiano Ronaldo, but VAR rules the strike out for offside.

No sign of a comeback anytime soon.

16:42a month ago

50' GOAL! Salah hat-trick

It's five - and Mo Salah has a hat-trick. It's bad for Manchester United - and it's difficult to think of what to say at this moment in time.

United have been disgraceful defensively and Liverpool have taken them to the cleaners.

16:37a month ago

46' We're back underway

Paul Pogba has replaced Mason Greenwood at the break, and United have it all to do to even get back into the game.

There are fans already leaving Old Trafford.

HT: Manchester United 0-4 Liverpool

It's disgusting from Manchester United - there is little work ethic and the defending is atrocious. Liverpool haven't even shown here what they're fully capable of, they've barely gotten out of second gear - and United are in desperate, desperate need of some inspiration with a result all but gone.
16:22a month ago

49' GOAL! Salah doubles his tally on the day

It's so, so easy for Liverpool, as Mo Salah turns it in from close range.

It's a disgraceful first-half performance from one of the better sides in the country - on paper.

United's defence is all at sea.

16:10a month ago

36' GOAL! Salah adds a third

Liverpool completely shred the Red Devils on the break, and Salah fires past De Gea at the near post, with no United defender in sight.

This could get extremely ugly.

16:07a month ago

35' United's sharp attack is blunt

United have proven that their defence is easily-broken, but their attack early on looked promising.

But now, they have very little urgency for a side two goals down.

15:58a month ago

26' Liverpool forced into an early change

It's a first-half substitution for Liverpool; the evergreen James Milner picks up a knock and is replaced by Curtis Jones.
15:53a month ago

22' United defence is dishevelled

United are far too easy to pierce on the break; there is a lack of organisation and communication - and the Red Devils are facing an uphill task to even think about dragging themselves back into the match.

Luke Shaw has a solid effort flash wide of the post.

15:45a month ago

13' GOAL! LIverpool double their lead

It's a brilliant breakaway from Liverpool, as they carve through the United defence with ease.

Alexander-Arnold plays it across the box and Diogo Jota's outstretched leg turns it in.

United have it all to do at Old Trafford now.

15:42a month ago

10' Rashford has a go from distance

United are looking extremely sloppy out of possession, but going forward they are menacing.

Marcus Rashford picks up the ball outside the box and tests Alisson, but the effort is just wide of goal.

15:37a month ago

5' GOAL! Liverpool take the lead

It's an early opener for Liverpool, who take their chance, as Salah finds Naby Keita with a perfectly-weighted ball.

Keita finds himself one-on-one with De Gea after a defensive mishap from the Red Devils and slides it past the Spaniard.

15:35a month ago

4' Fernandes misses a golden chance

It's a beautiful passage of play for United, who have the chance to take an early lead. Ronaldo plays the ball perfectly after Fred breaks up the play, but Bruno Fernandes' final effort clears the crossbar. The hosts may live to regret not taking that chance!
15:31a month ago

1' We're underway

Martin Atkinson blows the whistle and we are underway!
15:02a month ago

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sticks with what is trusted

Solskjaer trusts the pivot of McTominay and Fred, and goes with his gut in this instinct.

Whether Harry Maguire is 100% and able to play at his usual level will be seen, but anything less than a strong outing will result in a difficult afternoon for the Red Devils.

Cristiano Ronaldo spearheads the attack and will be complimented by the pace and pressing abilities of Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford respectively.

14:54a month ago

Mane and Fabinho miss out for Liverpool

The absences of Sadio Mane and Fabinho could be a major loss for the Reds today, given their respective qualities.

Liverpool will be missing a proper holding midfielder and will hope that Naby Keita and Jordan Henderson can fulfil the job that Fabinho usually undertakes.

Fabinho being missing is down to a knee injury that isn't suspected to be a long-term issue for the Brazilian.

Diogo Jota's performance in the last meeting between the two sides may have twisted the arm of Jurgen Klopp, and it is the former Golden Boot winner Sadio Mane who is replaced.

14:43a month ago

For the visitors...

Jurgen Klopp's selection is strong, although the absence of Sadio Mane may confuse some at first. The quality that Diogo Jota has however will force the United backline to work this afternoon.

XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Keita, Henderson; Jota, Salah, Firmino

14:40a month ago

Introducing the hosts...

Manchester United stick with the same side that beat Atalanta in midweek despite a first-half calamity.

XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Fred, McTominay; Greenwood, Fernandes, Rashford; Ronaldo

How will the game go?

It's going to be a long day at the office for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, especially with Raphael Varane absent for the hosts.

A lack of a true defensive midfielder will be an issue given United's fragility out of possession, and Liverpool's deadly counter-pressing may get the best of the Red Devils.

United's recent form, coupled with Liverpool's domination in the early stages of the campaign mean that United fans may be in for a tough afternoon on Sunday.

17:13a month ago

The last time the two sides met...

Back at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, the two sides met at Old Trafford after the original fixture was postponed.

While Fernandes gave the hosts an early lead, goals from Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino just before and after the break saw Liverpool race into a 3-1 lead.

Marcus Rashford brought the game back within a goal for the Red Devils, but Mohamed Salah's wonderful individual effort finished the job for the travelling side, who arrived back in Merseyside with three points.

Liverpool: Key player

The best player in the division as it stands, and possibly the best player in the world on current form - Mohamed Salah has lifted the performances of his entire side this term.

Salah has scored in nine consecutive games for the Reds and United's back-line, consisting of Victor Lindelof and a not-fully-fit Harry Maguire, will have much to do if they are to keep the Egyptian at bay.

Manchester United: Key player

For the home side, it's fair to say they would be much worse-off this year if it weren't for the returning Cristiano Ronaldo, whose goals have proved crucial for the Red Devils, especially in Europe.

Against their arch-rivals this weekend, Ronaldo will have to spur on his teammates with a professional performance.

Liverpool: Team news and probable line-up

With Thiago only just back in full training it may be another start for James Milner, with the indefatigable midfielder always a useful option for the Reds.

A hat-trick for Roberto Firmino last weekend should give him the nod over the talented Diogo Jota.

Predicted line-up: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Milner; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Manchester United: Team news and probable line-up

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Bruno Fernandes is doubtful for this Sunday's clash after picking up a knock in United's 3-2 victory over Atalanta in midweek.

Fred and Marcus Rashford's selection will also be questionable, with both coming off against the Italian side with injuries.

Predicted line-up: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; Matic, McTominay; Greenwood, Fernandes, Pogba; Ronaldo

16:48a month ago

Who will be the referee?

Anthony Taylor will take charge of this weekend's fixture, with the Altrincham-based referee being familiar with this clash in previous years.

Taylor was in the middle for Liverpool's 4-2 victory at Old Trafford last season, and will be assisted on Sunday by Gary Beswick and Lee Betts.

Mike Dean will be the fourth official and Stuart Attwell will be in charge of VAR, supported by Marc Perry.

Liverpool: Not to be forgotten

In all the talk of Manchester City and Chelsea being title contenders this year, it feels like Liverpool have gone slightly under-the-radar thus far.

However, the 19-time domestic champions are yet to be beaten in the league and look to be returning to their fantastic best after last season's disappointing title defence.

A wonderful, yet nervy victory in Europe this week will have made many stand up and recognise the danger that the Reds still pose at the top table.

Manchester United: Solskjaer on the hot-seat despite midweek win

It is starting to feel like Groundhog Day at Old Trafford, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back on the hot-seat after a difficult few weeks that has seen his side go three Premier League matches without victory.

The Red Devils were expected to contend for a place at the top of the table but have yet been underwhelming even in victory, leaving many to wonder whether a change in the dugout is necessary.

However, a victory against arch-rivals Liverpool would do a lot to hit back against critics for the Norwegian manager.
