Chelsea: What It Means
While they didn’t show the most clinical finishing throughout throughout the 90 minutes, they did create a number of chances which will please Thomas Tuchel who was forced to watch from the UK as he continues to isolate.
In the end, they’ll be relishing the idea of now just being one game away from lifting the only trophy they have yet to put in their cabinet - although they’ll know they have a tough task ahead with Palmeiras their opponents in the final.
Al Hilal: What It Means
The gulf in class between the two teams eventually did just show, although their determination to get back into the game in the second half was admirable and very nearly paid dividends had their finishing been better.
At the very least, they do still have the third place play-off to look forward to, in which they have the chance to bring home a medal back to Saudi Arabia, when they go up against African side Al Ahly.

Match Summary
Chelsea were by far the dominant side in the first half, as they piled on the pressure in the search of an opening goal, which took a little while to come after Romelu Lukaku wasted a couple of great opportunities.
However, as all great strikers should, the Belgian kept pushing and eventually put his side ahead from close range following a defensive mix-up from the Saudi Arabian side, meaning the Blues went in one goal ahead at the break.
The second half was a less convincing performance from the English side and for much of it Al Hilal looked the more threatening, but they held on for a 1-0 win which sees them through to Saturday’s final.

Player of the Match: Kepa Arrizabalaga
The goalkeeper made a couple of excellent saves in the second half to keep his side ahead, and so in the absence of any other particularly eye-catching performances, the Spaniard is the one I would pick out.
FULL TIME: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
It was a first half dominated by the Blues who piled on the pressure, but their exploits only brought them a single goal, which came from the much-talked about Lukaku as he smashed the ball home from close range.
During the second 45 minutes if anything it was Al Hilal who looked to be the more dangerous team, but they couldn’t find a way past Kepa and so it was the Blues who ended up 1-0 winners.

More promising from Al Hilal though.
64: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
The resulting corner doesn't trouble the Chelsea keeper but he's kept his side ahead there and that should serve as a wake-up call for the Blues.
62: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
Al Hilal will feel they've always got a chance when it's only a one goal difference.

Plenty of pushing and shoving going on in the box during that set piece too, but nothing doing for the referee.

Some snaps from the first half
HALF TIME: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
Romelu Lukaku got the important goal, though he certainly took his time, skewing a few efforts prior to that finish.
Nevertheless, the Belgian's goal is the difference and with Chelsea's defence virtually not at all threatened, it seems they are halfway to the final.
45+1: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
45: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
44: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
That set piece is put in by Ziyech and it falls to Alonso whose effort is blazed over the bar.

GOAL!: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea
Havertz puts a ball into the box which Al Shahrani heads straight down into the path of Lukaku and he has the easiest of tasks to smash home from close range.
Al Hilal can't say it hasn't been coming, and they now have it all to do.
30: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
29: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
I've got to say, it feels like a lot more than that.
28: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
26: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
25: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
23: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
That said, if Lukaku's current finishing continues that may take some time!

Lots of pressure being put on by Chelsea now.

He's flagged offside afterwards, but he really ought to have done better there, given his finishing prowess.
13: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
11: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
It’s the closest the Blues have come so far though.
9: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
Chelsea will need to do better than that if they want to score tonight.
8: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
5: Al Hilal 0-0 Chelsea
They’ll be hoping for a big upset tonight, but it’s certainly possible.

The tournament so far
In the opening game, Al Jazrira beat Pirae 4-1, sending the United Arab Emirates-based side into the second round.
There they faced Al Hilal, the current AFC Champions League holders, where they lost convincingly, by six goals to one.
The day before, in the other second round match, Al Ahly defeated Monterrey, sending them through to the semi final stage.
And finally, in yesterday’s game between Palmeiras and Al Ahly, the Brazilian side came out on top, meaning they will compete in Saturday’s final.
Automatic VAR on trial
The technology works by tracking players via multiple cameras, before coming to a conclusion over whether they are offside in under half a second.
As mentioned, it’s still in a trial stage, but if successful, it may be used at the FIFA World Cup later this year - though it remains to be seen how useful it really is.

Interesting lineup. It will certainly make us stronger defensively but I'm not sure about that attack. I guess we can make 5 changes if it doesn't work. Come on Chelsea. Let's get the win

Mateo Kovacic starts for Chelsea
That player is Mateo Kovacic, with the Croatian starting in midfield once again as he looks to play his part this evening in Abu Dhabi, both going forwards and in defence.
The 27-year-old has become a firm fans’ favourite in West London, and since adding more attacking output to his game this season too - including a Premier League Goal of the Month against Liverpool - he has only become more loved.
Moussa Marega in for Al Hilal
The main player to pick out from their side is that of top goal contributor, Moussa Marega, who will hope to add to his already impressive tally this season against Chelsea.
He’s hit the back of the net on six occasions so far during this campaign, as well as providing two assists, including one goal in that aforementioned previous match against Al Jazira.

What time does the game kick-off?
Kick-off itself is scheduled for 4:30 PM GMT, though in reality that’s firmly in the evening when taking into account the time difference in the UAE.
Al Hilal vs Chelsea Prediction
However, it’s important to remember the potential for upsets, no matter the seemingly insurmountable gulf in class that many will rightly point to prior to this match getting underway.
Still, I do fully expect Chelsea to get the win in this one, though perhaps not quite as convincingly as some may believe, meaning I’m going to go with a 2-0 win for Tuchel’s side.
Latest games between Al Hilal and Chelsea
It’s often the case in the FIFA Club World Cup that this happens, and it makes for some intriguing battles as both sides look to try and figure their fellow competitor out.
Therefore, while there might not be any previous meetings to look to in terms of form, if anything that makes it all the more exciting for one of these teams to beat an opponent for the very first time.
Key Player from Chelsea - Mateo Kovacic
One player who has been performing fairly consistently throughout though is Mateo Kovacic, with the Croatian international a stalwart in midfield, helping to cut out opposition attacks.
On top of that, he has picked up five assists too this season, so will be hoping to help his team win the final piece of silverware that, up until now, has eluded the trophy cabinet at Stamford Bridge.
Key Player from Al Hilal - Moussa Marega
As it is, the striker is no longer at the club so instead it’s going to be the second top scorer, Moussa Marega, who has scored six times and assisted twice during this season so far.
He also scored in his side’s previous game, so as a striker will want to continue in that form and add to his tally at this competition, even with the intimidating task of going up against the European Champions’ defence ahead of him.
Probable line-ups of Chelsea
- Reece James is back in the squad, thought it’s unclear whether he’ll be fit enough to feature
- One player who won’t be around is left back Ben Chilwell who has been ruled out until the end of the season with an ACL injury
- Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is back from AFCON but it’s uncertain whether he’ll start between the sticks again
Predicted XI
Kepa; Chalobah, Silva, Rudiger; Azpilicueta, Kante, Kovacic, Alonso; Mount, Lukaku, Werner
Probable line-ups of Al Hilal
- The Saudi Arabian side don’t have any major injury concerns heading into this one
- Al Hilal took advantage of their five allowed substitutes too, meaning their players shouldn’t be too fatigued either
- Given the dominance they showed last time out, it seems likely that it will be an unchanged side
Predicted XI
Al-Maiouf; Abdulhamid, Jang, Al-Bulaihi, Al-Shahrani; Kanno, Cuellar; Marega, Pereira, Al-Dawsari; Ighalo
Who is the referee and his assistants?
The fourth official will be Clement Turpin, while on VAR duty it will be Mauro Vigliano, being assisted by Nicolas Gallo.
Chelsea: Final missing piece
Their previous attempt, back in 2012, saw them lose in the final to Corinthians in Japan, so they’ll want to put that right and return with the cup this time around.
As a result of their previous experience in this competition, they will be fully aware that there is potential for an upset, so will be alert to that, and as such will be considered major favourites heading into this one.
Plus, with Thomas Tuchel’s side still in four other competitions apart from this one, added onto the fact they won the UEFA Super Cup earlier this season, and it has the potential to be a very special campaign for the Blues.

Al Hilal: Looking to cause an upset
However, they managed to get past Al Jazira in the second round with a huge 6-1 win, thanks to goals from six different scorers - the biggest ever win in the competition's history.
It's also worth remembering that they are the respective champions of their continental competition, beating Pohang Steelers 2-0 in the AFC Champions League final back in November 2021 which allowed them to get to this point.
Currently, they sit fourth in their league, and so while they might not be expected to get a result, stranger things have certainly happened before, and so Leonardo Jardim’s side will hope they can cause a big upset against the Champions of Europe in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday evening.
