Thanks and goodbye!

Huge thanks for tuning in for our coverage of what turned into an exhilarating game. Certainly made my pre-match prediction of a stodgy 1-1 draw look pretty foolish!

Until next time.

Chelsea 2 - 2 Tottenham (FT)

Man of the match

Lots of solid performances from the home side today, but for my money Reece James was the best player on the pitch.

He kept Son Heung-Min quiet for an hour, before switching to right wing back and putting in an imperious shift, nearly grabbing an assist from a sensational right-wing cross.

Chelsea 2 - 2 Tottenham (FT)

So at the end of an enthralling, feisty London derby, it's honours even.

Chelsea were the better side for most of the game and limited Spurs to barely any chances while creating plenty of their own, but one lapse in concentration at the death saw Harry Kane - who else? - grab the latest of equalisers.

Thomas Tuchel must be absolutely gutted. He certainly looked it.

Antonio Conte looks like he was sent off after that altercation at the end. It's all calmed down now - we shall see if the FA want to take any further action. They usually take a dim view of such behaviour.

The managers' interviews should make for entertaining viewing. Get the popcorn out!

FULL TIME: Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham

It's all over at the Bridge and Harry Kane's late, late header has snatched a draw for Spurs that they really didn't merit.

And now it's all kicking off on the touchline again! Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel square up to each other and now everyone is piling in!

Wow. Two manager full on squaring up - you never see that!

GOAL! Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham (Harry Kane)

90 + 5 mins

Absolutely unbelievable! From the corner Harry Kane glances in and Spurs have snatched a draw!

The away end, predictably, goes absolutely bananas.

Chelsea 2 - 1 Tottenham

90 + 3 mins

The free kick is headed away and Yves Bissouma's volley is turned behind for a corner.

From the corner, Edouard Mendy makes a smart save from Ben Davies' header - another corner for Spurs.

Now there's a VAR check for a red card - it looks like Cristian Romero pulled Marc Cucurella's hair. Nothing doing.

Chelsea 2 - 1 Tottenham

90 + 2 mins

Into 6 minutes of time added on here, and time is nearly up for Spurs.

Can they find an equaliser? It wouldn't be deserved, but in football you don't always get what you deserve.

Reece James was shifted to right wing-back immediately after the Tottenham equaliser, and he's been brilliant in that position. Chelsea look a totally different prospect going forward with him bombing down that flank.

GOAL! Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur (Reece James)

77 mins

The Blues are back in front, and it's all too easy from a Spurs point of view.

Raheem Sterling plays in Reece James in acres of space on the right of the box, and he slots past Hugo Lloris.

Spurs lost the ball from their own throw in and didn't react at all. Antonio Conte will be furious, but Thomas Tuchel is delighted and embarks on a celebratory sprint down the touchline.

What a chance for Chelsea!

Reece James sends over a scintillating ball from the right. It's on a plate for Kai Havertz, 6 yards out and on his stronger left foot, but he spoons it wide.

Suddenly, Spurs are fired up. Richarlison charges down Thiago Silva with a thunderous sliding challenge, much to the delight of the away end.

70 mins

There was a VAR check for that goal as Richarlison was in an offside position, but he is adjudged not to have been interfering with play.

What was Jorginho doing though - he tried a double drag back inside his own area! Schoolboy error and Chelsea pay the ultimate price.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Tottenham (Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg)

67 mins

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has done it! He pings one in the bottom corner from the edge of the box after Jorginho gives the ball away. Spurs are level!

Immediately, it all kicks off in the dugouts - Chelsea weren't happy with what the saw as a foul on Kai Havertz moments earlier.

Problems for Spurs

What does Antonio Conte do now? His team simply haven't been in the game and he surely needs to make a change.

Options from the bench include Richarlison, Lucas Moura and the lesser-spotted Bryan Gil.

Whatever he does, they have to find a way to get out of their own half.

HALF TIME: Chelsea 1 - 0 Tottenham

Chelsea haven't created reams of clear chances but they've been in complete control and lead at the break through Kalidou Koulibaly's spectacular volley.

In truth, it could have been more, and Tottenham will be happy to still be in the game. They just haven't been able to move the ball out from the back at all, while Chelsea have been able to easily beat the Spurs press.

Another chance for Chelsea, as N'Golo Kante's lofted cross to the back post is almost met by Ruben Loftus-Cheek. If he'd got any contact, it would surely have been 2-0.

Thomas Tuchel won't want the half-time break to come. I wouldn't want to be a Spurs player in that dressing room at half-time though - they've been abject.

Immediate chance for Spurs to hit back!

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Tottenham (Kalidou Koulibaly)

Not a lot of goalmouth action so far. Both teams looking solid and not giving much away.

Atmosphere building

As you'd expect for a game of this size, there's a carnival atmosphere already inside Stamford Bridge. A few of the locals look like they have been making the most of the sunshine.

Those faces may get redder still if the home side don't deliver today.

16:13a month ago

The heat of the battle

It's an absolute scorcher in London today. Current temperatures in West London are around 32 degrees celsius.

Common wisdom would say that such temperatures are likely to lead to a low-quality match, with both teams suffering in the heat.

Then again, conditions were similar in Brentford this time yesterday, and we all know how that one turned out...

16:04a month ago

Chelsea's new-look front 3

It's early days, but the unchanged forward line for Chelsea suggests Thomas Tuchel may finally have settled on a first-choice front three.

Criticised last season for over-rotating, the German currently appears to favour a fluid strikeforce of Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz.

They may lack a recognised centre-forward, but they looked extremely fluid last week in their victory at Goodison Park, with all three of them popping up all across the front line at different times.

15:58a month ago

The tactical battle

Thomas Tuchel looks to be employing his tried-and-tested tactic of deploying Reece James as a right-sided centre back to deal with dangerous opponents coming off the left. Today, that would be Son Heung-Min.

James has the pace to deal with the quicksilver Korean and has played this role to good effect in the past, notably against Wilfried Zaha.

It's a sign that Thomas Tuchel is worried about the Spurs counter attacks. He's right to be: under Conte, the North Londoners have scored 76 goals in just 37 games.

Can the Italian find a way to break down the Blues rearguard this afternoon?

15:48a month ago

Spurs unchanged

Antonio Conte has not seen fit to make any changes to his Spurs line-up today, and who can blame him? He watched his charges take Southampton apart last weekend and obviously doesn't want to change a winning formula.

The one player who could have come in is Ivan Perisic at left wing-back, but Conte has kept faith in the former Fulham man Ryan Sessegnon.

15:46a month ago

Loftus-Cheek gets his chance

It may be surprising for some to see Ruben Loftus-Cheek starting as a wing-back for Chelsea, but he played there frequently in pre-season for the Blues.

RLC has struggled over the years to get a consistent run in the team, but if Reece James is converted to a right-sided centre back, could the former Crystal Palace loanee finally nail down a regular spot on the flank?

15:43a month ago

Teams Announced

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel makes two changes from last week's win at Everton, as Cesar Azpilicueta and Ben Chilwell are replaced by Marc Cucurella and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. It looks like Loftus-Cheek will play at right-wing back.

Chelsea XI: Mendy, James, Silva, Koulibaly, Loftus-Cheek, Kante, Jorginho (capt), Cucurella, Mount, Havertz, Sterling.

Substitutes: Arrizabalaga, Pulisic, Chalobah, Broja, Hudson-Odoi, Chilwell, Ziyech, Gallagher, Azpilicueta

For Tottenham, it's no huge surprise to see Antonio Conte stick with the same eleven who dismantled Southampton so convincingly last time out.

Tottenham XI: Lloris (capt), Royal, Romero, Dier, Davies, Sessegnon, Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Kulusevski, Son, Kane.

Substitutes: Forster, Doherty, Sanchez, Richarlison, Gil, Perisic, Tanganga, Moura, Bissouma.

Prediction

This writer's prediction? I'm afraid I'm going to sit on the fence.

To me, this game has draw written all over it. Both managers are quite defensively-minded, especially in big games, and both will be happy not to lose at such an early stage of the season.

So I'm going for a tight, hard-fought 1-1 draw.

Spurs looking to end their blues against the Blues

Tottenham fans will be well acquainted with their recent record against Chelsea, but any that aren't may want to look away now.

Spurs have one just once in their last 37 visits to Stamford Bridge in all competitions, drawing 12 and losing 24. Last season, they lost four times to Chelsea without scoring a goal - twice in the league and again in both legs of the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

The nadir of this run surely came in May 2016, as Tottenham blew a two goal lead to surrender the title to Leicester City in the infamous Battle of Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea fans may be wondering how long this sort of run can continue, and perhaps Spurs look better equipped than ever to finally make their mark in their rivals' back yard.

15:12a month ago

Kulusevski looks to continue impressive Spurs start

At Tottenham, where they have been so reliant on Kane and Son for so long, the sight of a new attacking threat emerging has delighted the Spurs faithful. Dejan Kulusevski made waves last season after joining in January, grabbing 5 goals and 8 assists in just half a season.

Last week he continued his rich vein of form with another goal and assist, and he is fast becoming one of the most talked about players in the league.

Can he do it again today in one of their biggest games of the season?

15:08a month ago

Sterling the key man for Chelsea

Chelsea's goalscoring struggles are well documented. With Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner departing the club this summer, and no recognised centre-forward signed to replace them, the Blues are putting a lot of faith in Raheem Sterling to deliver.

Sterling - born and bred in West London - has 109 Premier League goals in his career, a very decent return for someone who isn't thought of as a ruthless finisher.

Most of those goals, though, came at Manchester City, where his teammates created chances for fun. Will he get as many opportunities in this more defensively-focused Chelsea team?

15:02a month ago

Spurs line up?

For Spurs, Antonio Conte confirmed this week that he will be without Oliver Skipp and Clement Lenglet. Similarly to the Blues, there is a question mark over the left wing-back position, with Ivan Perisic vying with last week's goalscorer Ryan Sessegnon for the slot.

Predicted line-up for Tottenham:

Lloris; Romero, Dier, Davies; Doherty, Bissouma, Hojberg, Perisic; Kulusevski, Son; Kane

15:00a month ago

Chelsea line up?

We're around half an hour away from hearing the team news, but we know already that Marcos Alonso won't be involved today for Chelsea as he edges closer to a move to Barcelona. Mateo Kovacic is also ruled out through injury.

One outstanding question is whether Marc Cucurella will come in at left wing-back in place of Ben Chilwell, or even as a left-sided centre back.

Predicted line-up for Chelsea:

Mendy; Azpilicueta, Silva, Koulibaly; James, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell; Mount, Havertz, Sterling

The man in black in the middle this afternoon will be Anthony Taylor, with Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn as the linesmen.

Kane and Son looking to get off the mark

Tottenham's thumping 4-1 victory over Southampton last week was close to the perfect start to the season for Antonio Conte's men, although there was one anomaly: neither Harry Kane nor Son Heung-Min managed to get on the scoresheet.

The pair grabbed 40 goals and 16 assists between them in the Premier League last term, and it surely won't be long until they get off the mark this time around. Today wouldn't be a bad day to do it!

14:34a month ago

Chelsea - new boys looking good

Chelsea gave debuts to all of their big summer signings  in last week's victory at Everton, and all three looked more than assured. Raheem Sterling ran the channels exceptionally well, Kalidou Koulibaly looked assured at the back, and Marc Cucurella showed off his silky technique as a late substitute.

All three are likely to be involved at some stage this afternoon and will be keen to make a strong first impression in their home debuts in front of the Blues faithful.

West London Setting

Welcome!

Welcome to Vavel's live coverage of a huge London derby at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea take on bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues dominated this fixture last season, beating Tottenham at home and away in the league without conceding a goal and repeating the trick in the two-legged Carabao Cup semi-finals. Antonio Conte, the Spurs boss who won the league with Chelsea in 2017, will be desperate to reverse that trend and strike an early season blow against his former employers.

Both sides opened their league campaigns last weekend with victories, albeit in different fashions: while Spurs put on a clinic to dismantle Southampton 4-1, Chelsea were somewhat less impressive in grinding out a 1-0 win away at Everton. Nonetheless, a win is a win, and Thomas Tuchel would surely be thrilled with a repeat performance and result here.

Who will come out on top? Stay with us to find out!
