Oldham Athletic are off and running under the new ownership of Frank Rothwell as the Latics defeated Dorking Wanderers 3-2 at Boundary Park.

The 72-year old Rothwell, who was introduced as the new owner of the Latics on July 31st saw his club go in front after just 12 minutes through Hallam Hope.

Oldham doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half as Chris Porter finished off a counterattack.

The lead grew to 3-0 after Ben Tollitt saw his shot deflected into the back of the net.

Dorking, playing in the Vanarama National League for the first time, scored twice in the final eight minutes courtesy of headers from Josh Taylor and Alfie Rutherford.

Story of the match

Dorking manager Marc White made two changes to the side that produced a draw in their first-ever match in the fifth tier as Bobby-Joe Taylor and Luke Moore came into the side for Jordan Cheadle and Dan Gallagher.

Just six minutes had passed when a cross from skipper Liam Hogan found Porter and his flick to Hope was headed wide from the edge of the six-yard box.

Sloppy play from the visitors led to Oldham's opener. Moore gave the ball away to Tollitt and he switched the ball to the left for Hope, who found the far corner with his curling effort.

Bobby-Joe Taylor did some good work down the left and he forced Latics goalkeeper Magnus Norman into a pair of low, diving saves. Josh Taylor kept Norman on his toes with a shot from outside of the area.

The hosts were particularly dangerous on the counter and Hogan had an opportunity from a corner, but he headed over. A second successive corner saw Slavomir Huk parry a Tollitt shot, but Porter's rebound was ruled out for offsides.

He then teed up Hope on a lay-off from a long ball, but the striker went wide by inches.

The visitors were dominating possession, Taylor firing wide from outside of the area before Bobby-Joe Taylor curled over and then found the side netting with his free-kick.

Shortly after the restart, Oldham doubled their lead as Luke Burgess capitalized on a loose header and he found space, Porter finishing past Huk on the left-hand side.

Huk was forced into a diving save from Burgess after Josh Taylor gave away a free kick on the edge of the area.

The hosts earned another free-kick and after the ball was recycled back to substitute Mike Fondop, the ball broke to Tollitt and his shot found the back of the net via an Ed Harris deflection to make it 3-0.

With less than ten minutes remaining, Josh Taylor headed a Bobby-Joe Taylor wide before a second chance presented itself, which he pounced on, a firm header beating Norman.

Four minutes later, Wanderers ensured a nervy finish as a driven cross by Bobby-Joe Taylor from the left finding Rutherford and he headed home.

The visitors went in search of an equalizer, Niall McManus and Jack Jebb seeing crosses blocked before Jebb wasted a golden opportunity, firing into the stands from a dead ball situation.

Six minutes of stoppage time went by with no further action as the Latics began a new era for the club with a victory.
